I had massive battery drain. I went for 30-40hrs standby to less than 2 hours standby. The problem was push email on an exchange server. I turned it off and update the emails every 15 minutes now.

Battery performance since upgrading to OS 4.1 has been dismal. It got to the point over the weekend that a full charge would only last about 4 hours with NO use. In an attempt to fix the problem I synced the phone and then employed the nuclear reset (Holding both screen and home buttons past the point the red slider comes up). I waited 10 minutes and cranked it up. I then went to Settings, General, Reset and pressed the Erase All Content and Settings bar. The handset went dark and when it came back up the only capability available was to make emergency call. I then synced and loaded all apps and data. It took 5 sequential syncs to get all the data back and the icons were in disarray. The good news is that the battery is acting normal. In the 12 hours since I took it off the charger, I still have 90% of the battery charge. This is a fairly painless solution as long as you get a good sync and backup before you go nuclear.

MASSIVE loss to battery life since installing OS4. At first, I thought it was the applications, but now I believe it's the signal strength to the phone network. I don't see the battery draining so much until I get home, where I know my signal strength is less than at work. I used to be able to go most of the weekend if not all weekend on a single charge, but after I installed OS4 the battery is dead at 6:00 am from a full charge at 5:00 pm the night before.

What is the fix. my 3gs battery can't make the day and I am not using it for internet to avoid battery drain.

The battery on my 3GS started draining extremely fast when I upgraded to OS4.0, to the point that I use my phone plugged in as much as possible. The most success I've had is by turning on airplane mode. This led me to think it's caused by open programs that access the internet while on standby like Safari, Mail, and Maps. But even closing all programs is not as successful as turning on airport mode. All I can say is what a pain!!! It's ridiculous... Not worth the upgrade. Period.

Just upgraded in the afternoon of 7/3 with battery fully charged, next morning battery completely dead.

Definitely seeing a loss of battery life. Cannot tell if it's multi tasking or being able to use apps such as pandora and multi tasking is just a symptom of being able to. It's bad....30 minute commute to work consumes 40% of batter life. 10 minute break from desktop charger takes 15% of battery life.
