A threepeat is a difficult and unlikely thing, and a big risk to rely upon, especially with this bunch who can't seem to stay motivated even in the Finals. Phil has done everything there is to do. What is there for him in another grinding, grueling season? What is it that he can look at and say, "If I can only to *that*, that's worth staying and fighting for"? Nothing he hasn't already done, really.
This is a good time for him to hang it up. I'd do it, in his shoes. Go out a winner, with the most championships and two in a row at the end.

This is about money. Phil and Jerry are playing poker a game that Buss loves and is very good at. When they hit the right number that both can live with it will be a done deal and Phil will be the Lakers coach next year.
