I usually tip at least 30-50 % for the first drink and at least 20 after that. Have to establish that you are a good tipper and will get better service in return. More times than not I have been served more quickly and with a stronger than normal drink for the compensation. Obviously each situation merits a different approach but on average this works most of the time.

If I am paying drink by drink, than it's $1 a drink. If I run a tab it's $20% +

It all depends on how many drinks the bartender buys me.
