Students tend to sound like their advisors when giving talks because:
advisors teach their students to present in a particular way.
advisors select students with similar personalities, which leads to similar presentation styles.
audience members only remember the cases where the student sounds like the advisor. Actually, the style distibution is pretty random.
student talks all sound the same, anyway. You only notice this for the advisors who still give talks like a student.
I have no idea. You couldn't pay me to listen to enough student talks to develop a theory for this.
