Why did Smokey/MIB order Sayid to kill Desmond when he needed Desmond alive?
Smokey was just testing Sayid and knew Desmond would somehow live
Smokey was testing Desmond, knowing if he was really "special" the Island would let him live
Smokey planned to "claim" Desmond, but needed him to "die" first
Smokey planned to assume Desmond's form (and powers) once Desmond was dead
Smokey hoped Desmond would turn the tables on Sayid and eliminate a Candidate
Smokey never needed Desmond alive (or to "sink the Island"). He just needed to kill everyone
