Most of todays motivational books and PMA books are based on books from the 1800-1900's bringing forth the original material is worth while....I commend you...put me done for a copy

Publishers know the general market for their books. Unless you have loads of captive buyers you need to sell it too! The trouble with self publishing is that you then have to self-market too!

There are many ways to go wrong with the aesthetic on this book. But it could be done right.

In the imortal tag line of Nike: "Just Do It!" Some would like it in short form or an "app". Damn it......we are MEN not kids. Take the time to learn!! Read. Study. Take responsibility! Yes it would take time to read it, but our most abundant resource is time. Instead of watching another reality crap show or dumping another beer down our throat and bemoaning how hard we have it, we as men should stand up and learn what our fathers and forefathers knew. This would be another of what my grandfather and father told me was needed for every man: another resource. I never hesitate to take on another resource that can help me further my maleness and manliness. Put me first on the list of purchasers!!

Do it. Not only should you do it; you MUST do it. There are so many men out there who could benefit from a book such as this. Many modern men are confused by the being of manly and would welcome some assistance, especially if they can buy it online (and anonymously!)

No, I'd not buy this as a book. I will not support 'fix yourself' 'self-help' and other motivational texts. In book format it is too easy to read too much and not take in anything, or to not act on what you've read (after all, you just read it, so that counts doesn't it?). If a text tries to break itself up in bits so that you read a lesson and maybe can take it in and act on it, it becomes too much like an exercise video "gotta read my 2 pages about being a better person" and then you usually end up not going back after your first day off.

I would be much more likely to buy a daily calendar (peel a page a day) with manvotional content, or daily challenges - heck, you could probably get AoM members to inundate you with suggestions for such challenges.

I thoroughly enjoy your site and I look forward to my daily dose of "Manliness", and a book wit and wisdom would enable me to delete many of the saved emails from its folder. I also think that a few "manly" poems should be peppered throughout its pages as well. But I agree with a comment posted previously, for the love of God do not call the book "Manvotionals"!

I would read this cover to cover and then some. The Art Of Manliness, both the book and the website, are outstanding. Practically perfect in every way. I'd even hazard a guess to say that reading that first book was the best thing I ever did for myself. I've enhanced nearly every aspect of my life, especially my attitude. Write it!

I believe this would be a great idea for a book. I am always so deeply motivated and inspired by poetry, philosophy, quotes, etc from some of the most influential thinkers and others, etc. I am on board, as well, I would love to purchase the first ART OF MANLINESS book as I enjoy the daily e-mails I receive from the creators of this awesome site!*

I like a lot of the content on this site, but the Manvotional stuff never really grabbed me. I think the publishers might be on to something.

If you can efficiently and economically self-publish, fine. But speaking as someone who makes a good living selling media and trying to predict what people will want or not want, I see this as a harder sell than your previous effort (which I thought was truly excellent).

  • 14skillz - 14 years ago

NO, i will not buy it. Here is my reason why:

There are tons of motivational books around. The power behind AOM is that those articles are quick and short. It seems like a better idea to write an article about some of those books already out there.

Perhaps maybe start some affiliate program with Amazone perhaps, cuz i realize you've got to keeps the bills paid.

Like many other guys I did not have great male role models. It's been quite a process to learn to become comfortable and secure in my own skin as a man. Now that I have a son I think this would a great resources for guiding my son. I think I would use it as a tool to learn together.

  • Len - 14 years ago

How about calling it something like:

"The Art of Manliness: Our Forefathers Speak" or something like that?

  • carlos moreno - 14 years ago

if i were you guys i would totally self-publish, put this out on lulu, promote it to the email list, and i'm sure you'd get a lot of folks to buy this book. i know i would! ...and via lulu you're not out any $$ to print a ton of books ahead of time.

hint: i'd also LOVE to promote this book via my magazine; i think it's right up our alley and something that our readers -- who are interested in personal and professional success -- would really enjoy.

I've enjoyed the "Manvotionals" on the website, and I'd buy the book. But I would not a book called "Manvotionals" to be visible on my shelf. It sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit. A title more refined and subtle would be appreciated.

I think it'd make a great graduation gift for younger men.

  • michaelm - 14 years ago

I would buy 4 copies. I love your site and newsletter. I forward it to others all the time and recommend it to everyone. So you mention you have a hard time getting advertisers? I work in marketing for EMS emergency, first aid, and rescue supply company. Give me a shout about your rates and I'll see what I can do. Every man should have the tools and emergency supplies on hand to be able to help others, his family, and provide for himself during disasters, medical emergencies, and everyday injuries from work or home projects. can I list my employer's website? www.buyEMP.com check out tjoos.com to find coupons to get discounts on our products. I'd be glad to issue a discount code to your readers too.

Man up! I've bought six of the The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man - Everyone I've given it to as a gift thinks it's awesome -

It's great to be a man, but it's even better to know how to be a real man.

  • JustineL - 14 years ago

ABSOLUTELY do it! DO THE BOOK :) I am a woman and read you daily and have turned on quite a few "wannabe" malebots :) - and it is amazing the change in these gents - not so much physically - but they walk a little taller and they are a bit more confident without the false bravado! SCREW the publishers and do it - you do not realize the gift you give to both male and females!

  • J. Pfiser - 14 years ago

Absolutely needed. No doubt about it. Especially as a reference book. Like a manvotional reference manual. you know men like to get to tge meat of things. It would be in library's, read to youth grouth, used for outreaches, sited in inspirational speeches, parts used in cub/boy scout development, church sermons, mens groups and eventually quoted on TV. I have not heard of a book like this one or the previous one. You could even send excerts like the Rich Dad author did when he released his book on the Conspiracy of the Rich.

And don't mind the publishers. Ain't nothing like a little rejection to give you fire to kick their @$$ by becoming a success.

  • Steve - 14 years ago

What a grest idea. I would gladly buy it and read it.

  • Nick - 14 years ago

Would I buy the book's contents? Absolutely. Would I want it in book form? Not really. Either as a day-by-day box calendar, an rss feed subscription, or an app.

  • Ben - 14 years ago

I love this idea and would buy at least 2 copies too. Would be especially great if the selections expanded to include great men from beyond the US and Europe.. Thanks for your excellent work!

  • Oliver - 14 years ago

I think the book is necessary. I left the church in my early twenties, and since then I have gradually shifted my focus away from strengthening and living my values and disciplining my mind to the point that I now, in my thirty-first year, find myself adrift. I long to redevelop a focus on values and on a positive, healthy mind-set, but without the connection to fundamentalism. The (modern) secular world offers little in the way of (good) values and discipline, and religion demands adherence to tenants I find unacceptable.
So, I encourage you in writing this book. I don't know whether it will be a great success for you financially, but I have confidence that it will improve the lives of at least a few men.

  • Matt D - 14 years ago

I would buy multiple copies for my friends as well as myself. Trust in yourself... you guys are onto something great.

  • T. HART - 14 years ago

Sounds like a birthday / Christmas gift. I'll take two when available.

  • Matt - 14 years ago

I like the idea of the book but probably wouldn't sit and read it cover to cover. Iwould rather see it as a "reference" book with different sections. I'm always looking for "man" ideas like motivational quotes, toasts for special occassions, kind words/phrases for my wife that I'm not good at writing, jokes/comments to begin a public speaking engagement, words of wisdom I can pass on to my kids (boy & girl specific) especially when they need guidance, etc. This would be great to have on my desk to refer to on a regular basis.

  • Paul C - 14 years ago

No publisher? Well what the hell do they know anyhow? Take a page out of Vince Flynn's playbook and self publish. Flynn self published his first book and it became a best seller.

  • Kirt - 14 years ago

I have connected several men with this website and I am sure that I speak for them as well... this is good stuff...
