The fact that she even got upset 24 years ago and this was even on her mind meant that she should have been out of the job 24 years ago and we would not be having this conversation today. I think this was all set up by the White House. The most that you hear out of Sherrods mouth and the administration is FOX NEWS. How Fox News is fueling the fire on this issue and how it should be shut down. She can take her lawsuit money and get a new life within another government job and that may be what this is about also. She did not get promoted for all these years so how else can she get any where----act stupidly.

I agree with the comment by Rational Debate above. Her racism back in '86 can be excused - she at least seemed to learn something from it, and was trying to advocate that others consider it also. In the process, however, she expressed her current current views which certainly seem to indicate continued racism with an added dose of class warfare, plus advocating that people seek government positions because it pays really well and you can't be laid off or fired is NOT.

The uninformed knee jerk reaction by Obama and Vilsack was disgusting. Even worse, however, now Obama & Vilsack are apparently not only offering her job back, but offering her a significantly HIGHER LEVEL POSITION.

Talk about hysterical knee jerk reactions! The first was bad enough, this is adding insult to injury and repeating the initial offense in spades - they didn't even learn from their first mistake! No big surprise I suppose as the Sherrod firing showed that Obama et. al. never learned from the beer summit (police acted stupidly h/t Obama).

The American Thinker article posted by David Homsey abave also adds a very interesting aspect to the entire scenario.

The woman is a racist with an agenda.

Hell no. Even if it was 24 years ago, it doesn't really sound like her views on race have changed all that much, based on her recent comments.

And the NAACP people who clapped and applauded when she said she didn't do as much for the guy, and brought him to one of his 'own kind', should all be ashamed of themselves.

His 'own kind'? I'm sorry Sherrod - unlike people like YOU, most of us just see people of ONE KIND - AMERICAN.

Good riddance. Take your huge lawsuit settlement that ended up costing taxpayers nearly a billion dollars, and GTFO.

Interesting article by Rosslyn Smith on American Thinker today regarding Ms. Sherrod. There may be a whole lot more to this woman than we think. http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/07/forty_acres_a_mule_sherrod_sty.html

Without bothering to check the facts, Obama and his appointee Vilsack acted stupidly (h/t Obama). These are the people with the finger on the button of the nation's nuclear arsenal, and control of billions of taxpayer dollars. We deserve FAR FAR better from civil servants, especially those in high level positions. Its crucial in our President, and he's failed the test repeatedly now.

Sherrod was unfairly caught up in this and never should have been fired as she was. However, in her speech there were several current views she expressed which indicate serious problems such that she should not be in a position of this power - controlling over a billion taxpayer dollars annually.

*She corrects herself and says 'well, it IS about black and white' (bigotry/racism)
*She says, more than once I believe 'its about who have versus those who don't (class warfare)
*She says she 'sent him to ONE OF HIS OWN KIND, a WHITE lawyer' (bigotry/racism)
*She advocates taking a federal job BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET FIRED OR LAID OFF. This may be true, unfortunately, but why is someone in her position advocating this sort of mentality?? Pushing it as the sole reason to get a federal position? That and she said the salaries were excellent. These types of attitudes and the inability to fire poor performers are a huge part of what is wrong with our current government.
*When the NAACP audience cheered and clapped her for discriminating against the farmer, why didn't she in any way indicate disapproval? Say anything like "no, now, just wait," or a hand held up, ANYTHING??

So. She was unfairly fired, Obama and Vilsack had an uninformed knee jerk reaction that was grossly inappropriate for persons in their positions, and yet Sherrod still should not be in any position with that authority and budgetary control. She should NOT get her job back.

I wish there were some accountability for the actions by Obama and Vilsack in this, unfortunately I doubt they will face any real consequences.

Her use of terms like "his kind" is a sign to me she has serious issues with race. And not just from 24 years ago.

We need serious and professional people leading multibillion dollar departments, not fools.

  • Lee - 14 years ago

She should not get her job back, because her "job" should not even exist, nor should the "department" of the government she works for.

After seeing more of the context, I am inclined to give Sherrod a pass. While I would like to think I would have risen above the occasion, if the roles had been reversed, I would have to admit I might have done the same. I think that's a very human reaction. I am deducting points, however, for the bureaucratic sense of entitlement which holds that federal workers are there for life.

It is unfortunate that time and money had to be wasted on this. Shirley Sherrod should never have had to go through this.

This is so typical of society. Time and money wasted on idiotic issues where disciplinary action should have taken place.

The current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania AV, Washington DC needs to lose his job.
