Try a little Thousand Island Salad Dressing .. DELICIOUS!! Just like my mom used to make. Enjoy!

Slice 1 - inside and out - place on pan, brown and flip; place cheese on browned side.
Slice 2 - outside only - place on top of melting cheese; flip whole sandwich when first slice has browned; brown slice 2; DONE!
I've been making it this way all my life. My mother taught me this technique. Putting the cheese against a hot surface helps it melt faster. If you don't use butter, the bread just toasts/burns.
And I only use traditional Kraft singles yellow American cheese. It doesn't matter what bread you use, except the cheapest white bread doesn't hold up well to the butter.

Mayo and mustard on the inside and butter on the outside. Makes it creamy and spicy. Excellent!

Butter on both sides of the bread, maybe with a little tomato and bacon, or mustatd. Best thing in life!

The perfect grilled cheese includes fresh sliced roma tomato, a thick slice of fresh mozzerella and a grind of italian herbs. The bread should be lightly spritzed in olive oil on the outside and the whole sandwich should be allowed to slowly melt into heaven on a low heat. Perfection!

OK, maybe some people like the flavor from Olive oil, but I don't. I'm really just referring to vegetable oil or some other tasteless spread. Yuck.

Use olive oil instead of butter for a healthier, tasty grilled cheese.

I used to work at a place that used mayo, but I never tried the sandwich. In my opinion, it MUST be butter and not margerine or some other oil. No flavor.

Butter on both sides, and we LOVE to use Orowheat's Potato Bread - OMGoodness!!

Extra Virgin olive oil instead of butter makes a lighter, crispier, and tastier crust. Just put in pan, not on bread itself (will make it a bit oily if you apply to bread). Watch high heat or it will burn the oil. Lower and slower.

Cup of tomato soup on the side.

Grilled cheese is a staple in our home! We recently did bruschetta grilled cheese - pesto bread with mozzarella, tomato, and basil - butter on the outside of the bread only! It was outstanding.

The worst grilled cheese sandwich that I know of is served in a elementary school in Virginia, where to save time, they grill ONE side of the sandwich, and leave the other soft. I didn't think one could actually mess this sandwich up until I had lunch with my kid one day. Sad.

Mayo! Easy to spread, makes a crispy brown crust and a tiny hint of lemon, if you use a good one. Don't even THINK of using Miracle Whip.
