It came down to two things: MONEY (tv revenue) and EXPOSURE (the church's reach through the US for sports recruitment and church growth). Although I don't think any of this would have happened if Utah hadnn't left the partnership...somehow those two schools felt tied together and when that tie was broken, well, BYU took the logical next step.
Now, they should have TV revenues of 3 to 4 times what they get with the MWC, and they're in a better basketball conference...although not sure what they'll do with the other sports not played in the WCC.
I'm sure they'll figure something out...Mormons are pretty clever that way.

This is a great move for BYU, one of the few universities that could pull this off. Too bad things didn't work out with the MWC, but this is the right move for BYU.
