I still don't understand the common enthusiasm for Martin Freeman. He's a good actor, and has some Bilboish qualities about him - but is lesser in both of these qualities to Michael Sheen, on the same level as Colin Firth, and only a little bit more appropriate than Tom Hollander. All these actors would make good Bilbos, and Martin Freeman's not the obvious choice in my opinion.

Quote on the IMDb from Martin Freeman: "If I could get bands to come and play in my house, I'd like that. I've never been to a festival. I'm a creature of habit, mashed-potato comfort, I like rugs. Our sofa's squishy. Maybe too squishy - it's hard to get up sometimes." - if that's not a Hobbit, I don't know what is!

Agreed Freeman looks like a Hobbit - he has that everyman quality about him that seems to resonate with the "stay-at-home" personality of a Hobbit. James McAvoy is too pretty-boy (yes, yes I know make up could fix it) but I would say he's too polished to be our flawed hero. Same goes for Colin Firth. Funny though, Freeman's the youngest of the 3!

Martin all the way. I hope this happens.

I forgot to weigh on on McAvoy. I think he has a shifty look. He was okay in "Becoming Jane", but he doesn't have that "Hobbit" quality.

Freeman looks like a Hobbit! I pictured Bilbo at 50-something(the age he is when The Hobbit begins), as a bit chubbier. He could go on the Sean Astin/Samwise diet!

Martin is my first choice for Bilbo, but only as long as they find a schedule that also allows him to make AT LEAST one more season of Sherlock! Sherlock is wonderful and I crave it like Golem craves the Ring. I also REALLY want the Hobbit movie to be made, but there are other actors who could do a great job with the role.

James McAvoy is my first choice, nothing against Martin but in comparison to McAvoy he just does not have the emotional range as a actor.
You only have to look at "Wanted" to know that James could perfectly portray Bilbo's character arc from timid hobbit to giant spider killing, dragon teasing hero.

Martin is Perfect to play bilbo baggins! As long as its not james mcawoy. I really do not want him to play bilbo, he is too well-known.. Martin would be the perfect choice! =)

I'd never heard of him other than seeing his name here, but he looks okay for a Bilbo.
As for Ian Holme, he was supposed to be 111, and you say he was "too old"? I'm sure Ian would be flattered to know someone thinks he looks older than 111! ;)

Of course, I'm sure he would be fantastic, but how can they possibly have him when they need to start filming season two of Sherlock??

I have no problem with Martin as an actor (he is great in Sherlock), but my first choice has always been Tom Hollander.
He is an excellent actor and a better fit for the role.

Actually, Colin Firth was my first choice, but Freeman is my second.
Martin Freeman IS Bilbo Baggins. He just needs a wardrobe change. Casting him will elevate this film immeasurably. Though Iam Holm is a great actor, and did a nice job, he really was too old in FOTR. But that can't be helped now. Freeman is perfect for this part just the way he is.

I think he looks a little like Ian Holme. Once he's done up like Bilbo I bet he'll resemble him more. :)

He could be a good choice but Bilbo would have to look like Ian Holm, to keep the mind of The Lord of The rings, like a symbolic reference...

My first choice was David Tennant, but I am perfectly happy with this choice if it means THEY START FILMMING!!!!!!!!!!
