To me enjoyment of The Human Centipede comes down to whether or not an audience member is able to sit back and get on board with the ludicrousness of the concept.

Yes 3 people attached ass-to-mouth is overtly hilarious and at first the image itself is bound to raise a smile. But focus on the intensity of Dr Heiter and get on board with this being a story about insanity, ambition, Godliness and humanity and The Human Centipede is thematically no different from the likes of Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde or The Island of Dr Moreau.

It is graphic without being gory, stylish without being stuck up and funny without being farcical. Tom Six clearly knows his audience will treat The Human Centipede as more of a comedy than a horror, and his visuals certainly play on this, but if anything the film goes to show how finite the gap is between laughter and terror.

I am not saying The Human Centipede should win any awards, but I think its production value (including the performances) and concept should not be the sole factors on which it is judged. Yes the two American actresses are almost unbearable to watch in their portrayals as the hapless victims- making, for my money, the absolute wrong decision at every turn. But for the story to play out the victims MUST be idiots to get themselves into this mess, and again Tom Six takes this conventional conceit of horror and exaggerates it, punishing the girls stupidity accordingly.

I do not expect everyone to have these same opinions as me, indeed I am sure most won't. However the greatest joy of The Human Centipede has been that is has become the ultimate movie talking point of 2010 (who discusses Inception any more?) an achievement in its own right. Like or loath, The Human Centipede is a film that people will struggle to stay on the fence about, and as much as anything it should be praised for generating an opinion in people, something we encourage you to share on the comments section below.

So I vote YAY! I had a good time, was suitably impressed by the film making on show, and chose to pretend that there will be NO sequel next year.
