Is the era of American dominance over?

Ryan--thank you for your post. I think you are making a good argument here. There are a lot of moving parts in the global economy. The US and its economy doesn't stand alone, but must be evaluated in light of economic developments in other places (as in the cases you cite, Asia and Europe, two important economic centers).

I do not think that America was or can be deemed the most dominant force in the world. I say this because of all the other countries that make up this world whom play essential parts in America's success, and other wealthy and culture rich countries. Most of the other countries that have a decent economy and are able to outsource to manufacturing countries like China and India for imports and exports all over the globe can not be left out. also the countries from whom we get our raw products from play huge parts in how our economy acts. granted we do have a exceptional schooling system, other countries also have exquisite school systems. For instance Japan has over 500 excellent colleges, and Europe is home to over 700 universities. Though America may be at the top of some categories like imports and exports or unemployment, though I believe America is not the most dominant in the world, but could be the most cocky.

Mike--great to hear from you. Thanks for your reasoned answer. I agree with you assessment and would add that our military power has helped mask the serious structural problems in our economy (namely the great disparity of wealth in our country). Trillions for war means less for everything else...

I do think the US is reeling - there will always be some sort of panache associated with making it in the USA - businesses, arts and culture, etc. We also have a huge university system that seems to be highly regarded throughout the world and the one thing that will make us continue to be a major player is our ability to mass-produce food to feed the world. We are losing our status (or have lost?) in banking and I think our nation is way behind the curve on religion/state issues - which to me is the ultimate of ironies.

    Good thought provoking question.
