Shame on all of you who say "let him go." This guy created what Yankees baseball truly is. I understand that a lot of people say "it doesn't matter what he did, it's about what he still can do." I understand that too, however, you cannot let go a Yankees icon, idol, and arguably one of the best players to put the pinstripes on. Let the guy move to the outfield, or here is a good solution, put Cano (who came up through the farm system as a SS) at shortstop and move Jeter to second base (just like David Ekstein did). Do whatever it takes to keep him in pinstripes and give the team the best chance of winning. We all know, having Jeter on your team gives you a better chance at winning, so keep him some way.

If it was anyone but Jeter, this conversation would take the shape of who would even want an old, no range, .270 average, no pop in the bat shortshop. To give him a multi year anywhere north of journeyman money is nuts. Having said that, he'll get 3 at 45 - 50 mil.

derek is the most cool headed, best shortstop ever to play the game, letting him go would be the greatest
mistake ever in the yankee franciasee, i say keep derek and let giradi GO.

    Come on, two things. here:

1.- Class is worth the dough; Jeter has the former, and the Bombers have both.
2.- Since he has class, he won't ask for anything ridiculous.

Besides, ain't Yankee history great? And a pivotal element in it is loyalty, team-to-player and viceversa; the stuff that retires numbers in the quantities Yankee Stadium prides in.

The Yankees can offer a 2 years contrac for $20mil to our captain Dereck Jeter so hecan get his 3000 hits this year. Then next year is the farewell tour to a wonderful carrer. Dereck please you know that you are ready to go so please get the money, get your 3000 hits and be happy!!!
    sincerely your fan,
    Killer Joe

Jeter is worth more to the Yanks than just as a player. He is the face of the Yankees. He will bring in mucho bucks to them in his quest for 3,000 hits. He is to the Yankees what Joe D and Mantle were. Give him 3-4 years at about an average of $15 -20 million.

  • A ROD - 13 years ago

Give him a lifetime contract. Make him the "batboy"

$10 Million a year lifetime services contract. THe final $ amount is less important than the committment. He is what the Yankees should be all about. Confident and selfless. All about winning. Treat him right and what few others there are like him will come. Treat him like a piece of meat and in future generations of players, that's what you'll get.

  • Mike - 13 years ago

3 yrs at $20MM per as a thank you. 3rd year will probably be a wasted yr but Jeter IS the Yankees.

  • Rob - 13 years ago

Whoever says Jeter should retire now is a fool. There is absolutely no doubt that he will play at least one more season because he's 74 hits away from the immortality of 3,000 hits. This has never been done by any Yankee player, which is why the Yankees will overpay to keep him from going to his hometown Detroit Tigers. I don't see him insisting on more than a 3-year deal, though he'll probably get about $30 million for 3 years.

  • Jon - 13 years ago

I believe the Yankees will give Derek a life time contract & spread it out over the next 25 yrs..he will be an active piece of this org for many years beyond retirement & happens to be the only 3,000 hit man(soon) & go into the HOF while employed by the Yanks...he's the best home grown Yankee since " The Mick "...end of case..

  • cory wieder - 13 years ago

Derek was a great player.I am huge Jeter fan but he is not a great player anymore. In fact he is barely a good player if you go by stats alone.Of course with Jeter you don't go by stats alone.Him and Mo were the 2 top reasons why the Yanks have won 5 world series since 96.And during the years that they didn't win it was never because of their bad years.Everyone saying give Jeter what Arod is making are ridiculous.Steroids or not Arod produces big hits and big rbi's. Jeter use to but doesn't anymore and I've had it with that "jump pass" already too.I know for a fact that he would have thrown out many more runners if he would have set and planted that foot and made a strong throw instead of those lolly pops that take 5 seconds to get over to first.Jeter strikes out way too much for a guy that doesn't hit home runs and espescially for a lead off hitter. Also his speed has diminished greatly too.I see ground outs that use to easily be infield hits but now he's out and by plenty. However I don't want to ever see him in another uniform so the Yanks should sign him for 3 to 5 years at around 9 or10 million per season and after he gets his 3000th hit ask him to join the coaching staff and eventually take over for Girardi. That would be showing loyalty which everyone wants to see and gives him the chance to retire on his own terms without being embarrassed.

  • Debbie Powers - 13 years ago

Pay him at least three years....he is still great defensively, makes very few errors, and never makes a mental mistake. He has a lot of baseball left in him, just had a tough year at the plate. Next year will be better...he will be back up to hitting over .300...just wait and see!

  • Michael Carey - 13 years ago

Jeter is the heart of this team and was not the reason for this team losing this year. The chemistry and inspiration he brings to the other players which by the way A Rod does not, is the reason he should be signed to a three year contract. The guy is aleays in the line up. Not like so many other high priced athletes who after they sign for big bucks get hurt and you hardly see them play a whole season. Pay this guy!!! His value to the team is more than the fact he is 36 or 37.

We love what Derek Jeter has been for the Yankees, an elite player and a winner. He's pushing 37 years old, has greatly diminished range and doesn't drive the ball like he used to. He's lunging at pitches he used to take for balls. Father Time is a sunuvabitch. He's not going to get any better, only worse. Prime time for touted prospect Eduardo Nunez has arrived. It's time to accept a diminshed role with the Bombers or play a year or two elsewhere. Thanks for the memories, Derek. You're the best. Kiss Minka goodnight, you lucky bastard.

  • Patricia Brady-Danzig - 13 years ago

Derek Jeter has had a brilliant career.
As he approaches 40, he needs to think in a different manner.
He should be willing to start his "retirement" gradually
and leave while he is ahead.

  • Matt C - 13 years ago

bumped into him and his bodyguard at the applebee's in lawrenceville, nj several years back..he's an ahole. not friendly at all

  • Joe Girardi i dont know what im doing either - 13 years ago

dump him...if you can't perform anymore..no sense keeping him just because of what he did over his career..we need a young shortstop like Texas has..that can make the plays and hit. sorry derek thanks for the memories. take your money and go...

  • kevin - 13 years ago

It's time for jeter to take a utility infield role...a DH...job...a little left field....and a little first base...good at none of these positions...but good for the new guys...In all honesty though!!!...He should walk away

  • Michael Ayala - 13 years ago

Derek is and has been one of the pure role models in all of sports in the past 15+ years. Captain Jeter has shown nothing but class both on and off the field his entire career. In todays world of free agency how many players of his caliber started through the minor leagues and spent his entire career with one organization. I no longer watch professional basketball and NFL players are constantly in the news for off the field issues. Please show my children that a person like Derek is valued in our society. He has never and will never embaress himself or the Yankees. Trust him to know when to step down. Money has never been an issue in NY. The young promising prospects of the future will need his leadership and guidance. He has always been worth more than his stats. He is the Yankees. Can you ever imagine him in another uniform? Will the Yankees be remembered for treating A-Rod better than him? Lock him up for life. There will always be a role somewhere in the organization for a man like him. I say give him a piece of the team. His leadership and respect for the game are invaluable. It can't be just about winning. We've had our share and will see many more championships only if we don't loose our Yankee tradition. Remember it's how we play the game. Loyalty, Tradition, Respect for the game. It's not just about winning. Shame on those hanging thier heads because we ONLY made it to the championship round. We lost because of pitching, let's be real. Well make our off season moves and continue to be the best organization in baseball. How can you let fans of teams who have never won anything or maybe won it once or twice or many years ago taunt you. I could never enjoy another Yankee win if Derek is wearing another uniform or is kicked to the curb. I can't swollow getting cheap with Derek after all we threw at A-Rod. Front office, Advisor, Consultant he must remain with the Yankees for life................................

  • luis monserrate - 13 years ago

Must start off saying that I'm not a Yankee Fan but I will say that Jeter has always been one of the the best around he should be resigned by the yankees to at least 3 yrs but he should no longer be the everyday shortstop. He did look kind of bad in this series but I still think that He has a lot to offer let him mentor the younger players on this team let him play DH,every now and then relieve Mark at first and ARod at 3rd but I think he will have to take a pay cut to continue to wear the pinstripes. Let's back him up for playing the game the right way and always giving his all.

  • DAVE - 13 years ago

Jeter is past his prime and over the hill...lol...the yankees have over 200 million in salaries and cant get past a team like texas with a payroll of $50 million...If there was a salary cap they would probaly be in last place....LOL !!!!!!!!

  • Irwin - 13 years ago

That's the difference between the Yankees and the Red SUCKS - tradition and loyalty. It's not the $$ that concerns me about Jeter but where to play him - I say trade Tex and move him to first base.

Jeter is the Yankees. He has conducted himself with dignity and respect. All present Yankees and future Yankees look to him as a role model. The way he is treated at this time will send a message to all Yankee players and fans who want to know how the Yankee Brass acknowledge loyalty and performance. He is still better than 90% of the shortstops playing today. He has never asked for any special treatment and has never embarrassed the organization. I believe he will retire when he feels he can no longer be an asset to the Yankees. He helped the Yankees attain fame and fortune. Now is the time for the Yankees to take care of Jeter.

  • Diane - 13 years ago

Aw, you New Yorkers give me a pain. Jeter is a great player. Where's your loyalty? What if you had to sit year after year and watch a team lose all the time. But we still stayed loyal. Yes, I'm talking about the Rangers. I'd like to see how New Yorkers would take it if the Yankees lost that often. What would you do? Blow up Yankee stadium?

  • mls - 13 years ago

The problem is that he will not move himself offof shortstop there by discouraging young shortstops that feel they will get to the big leagues faster with another club. even Mickey Mantle anf yogi Berra moved positions when they got older. I would give him two years at 12 million a yearand i dump Posado altogether.

  • RJ S - 13 years ago

If Jeter is willing to sign a true value ($6-7M a year), 2 year contract, sign him. If not, let him go. He's too old to be a good player, much less a great player, and he displayed that in the playoffs. I don't understand the whole 'give him whatever he wants' nonsense that Mike Francesa and others extoll - this isn't football or basketball where veteran leadership is huge to a team. Production matters most, and Jeter can't provide that anymore.

  • Ron Marlow - 13 years ago

The comment about the Red Sox is misplaced, none of the players mentioned were 36 years old. Jeter has been a great Yankee. However, the Yankees should only resign him to a one-year deal with an option for an additional year. The contract should be no more than a base amount of 5 million with inentives. Anything more is paying for something other than performance.

  • Tony Messineo - 13 years ago

It's time to think about Nunez taking over at short. Jeter knows that time is near, Move Derek to left field. I
know we have Gardner there but speed alone does not make him start over Derek. since rumors about Crawford
keep coming up (which won't happen as far as him coming to the Yankees) it's time to make the move to left field for
Derek, and a three year contract is what it would take to satisfy both Derek and the Yankees.

  • Pat - 13 years ago

Let Giradi go-- and make Jeter player manager

  • shutiggyup.com - 13 years ago

The most overrated good player in the history of sports. Cue up Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing'.

  • Ramon Cruz - 13 years ago

Sad to said, but Jeter look old last night. Those last four at bats were about the worsened that i have seen for an aging ball player.

  • Roger MacDonald - 13 years ago

The sad reality is that there is no longer a market for Jeter's services. It's not as though other teams will be bidding. Being coldly objective, if the Yanks allow sentiment to rule and resign him, even for one year, it will be to their detriment. The ideal situation would be that Derek decide to retire and that the Yanks home opener be celebrated as Derek Jeter Day. It's time for both sides to move on.

  • David - 13 years ago

The Red Sox let their icons go when they thought they were finished. They let Roger Clemens go (it was a mistake but then we found out steroids were the reason for his comeback), they let Pedro go, they let Damon go... If Jeter is willing to take a 2 year contract for about $16 million I would bring him back, if not, let him go.
He is bound to get worse not better....

  • abe - 13 years ago

He showed some real signs of aging this season. Give him 2 years max. He needs to be willing to take a significant pay cut. His fair value is no where near what he made this season
