Don't use the first person in academic writing.

Never use the passive voice when you can use the active (or vice versa).

Don't end a sentence with a preposition.

Don't start a sentence with "however".

Don't start a sentence with a coordinate conjunction.

Don't start/end a paragraph with a quotation.

Don't use "they" to mean "he or she".

Always put the punctuation before the closing quotation marks, even if it makes no sense at all.

Don't write "don't" (because you shouldn't use contractions).
