Jeremy Brett was the definitive Sherlock. I love his beautiful elocution, eccentric gestures and the quirky unconventionality of the character. Brett worked obsessively on his character, determined to portray a deeper personality than "the mind without a heart". Brett's Holmes is a fully rounded character and reveals a fascinating egocentric; charming yet troubled, brilliant yet flawed.

Holmes became a personal quest for Brett. His commitment to the search for the missing side of Holmes' personality became in his own words "dangerous" and through this he became aware of the severity of his manic depression. Despite personal tragedy and declining health he worked with unwavering commitment and professionalism.
He really gave himself to the character and it shows. The mesmerizing and charismatic quality he has is shared by few other artists - its something in the alchemy of artistic virtuosity and personal commitment.
