I do not know about anyone else, but if you had a category for "sadness", you would get a response from me ( we lost our baby Elin to Heaven on Dec 20, 1976). We have moved on, but it is often relfective time of what would the Holidays be like with her here at age 35.
So, many might be having their first holiday without a loved one. Or, they may have lost a loved one (maybe a child like us) during the Holidays. With this economy, I am sure more than a few are not celebrating much of anything. You mentioned ex-spouses, but some are just finding out that they are soon to be an ex-spouse themselves. ...and the list could go on.
This is not to put a damper on a positive time of the year. But, it does give us pause to be sensitive to those around us that may not be as cheerful through no fault of their own.
