I think the best answer to this common question could be given in two ways. Use less energy. Yes that seems impossible and almost counter productive to the "great forwarding of civilization" but I know I am not the only one who would agree the best step is use less energy in general. Another way of stating that to me is use yourself. Human power where ever applicable: walking, biking, paddling, manual tools & appliances.
In terms of needing to use non human sources of energy of course I would agree with Anne Woiwode that the best source of energy really depends on where you are and what makes the most sense in your local situation. There is no one solution. We need to change the way society thinks and works, not just the resources it can exploit.

but that's just what I think after all... :)

The BEST answer is NOT one choice, but a site specific set of options that takes advantage of the particular circumstance, is appropriately scaled to the need, and as much as possible represents sustainable, renewable and nonpolluting sources, and is put in place only after maximizing efficiency. A vote like this, which is a popularity contest, continues the myth of silver bullets for our energy needs when we need silver buckshot.

I picked wind because it is widely available in good quantity in MI but it is the wrong question!
