No, IOS 4.2.1 didn't fix the proximity sensor problem. I just wish Apple or the telecompany could be willing to compansate for all the extra connection-fee's the problem generates. Since once have to redial each time one hang up the call with the cheek. Which happens several times within in few minutes.
I doesn't dare to send in the phone as long as Apple is in lack of delivery capacity. In Norway there is still several months of waiting for those who order iPhone 4 now. Apple won't/can't tell or promise the stores any date for the next deliveranse. Let's hope it's because they are speeding up to release a redesigned iPhone 4 or to release the iPhone 5. In that case, I guess it will be crusual that they have built up the delivery capacity at the same time.

I love my iPhone, but the proximity sensor continues to be a HUGE flaw with the phone. Nearly every time I'm on the phone, I end up hanging up on people, pressing buttons, or even calling and conferencing in other people, all with my face. It is VERY frustrating!

Not only did this not fix the proximity sensor, it seems its been a much bigger problem since I downloaded the update on Wednesday night. Already, this was my third phone with this problem, and i just swapped it out for a new one again.

Speck rubber case received as part of the free case deal. Constantly hit speaker, mute, hang-up from my cheek.

I use a transparent hard case from incase and a "skin" with attractive graphics. I have proximity sensor problems daily and it's really frustrating. If anything, the IOS 4.2.1 release has made it worse. I will try removing the skin and then the case as necessary to see if the situation improves.
To be honest I have had no problems with the prox sensor since I bought the phone just after 4.1 was out.
I did have the problem with signal when holding the phone in my left hand, but the free case does help. I chose a snapcase to cover the back of the phone too the Apple bumper is no protection at all there.
4.2 Has been a bit of a yawn actually, I only updated to fix the screen lock issue. Free Find my iPhone was a plesany surprise though, but stingy that it's not available for the 3G or 3GS.

Apple absolutely has not fixed the proximity sensor with either update. I've tested 7 different iPhones and all of them failed the tests for the sensor working. My own iPhone 4 never had its sensor work properly after both updates. In fact, today, I hung up on someone with my cheek because of the continued sensor malfunction.
