Here's hoping the Yankees cave in and pay Mr. Jeter the 23 Million he feels he deserves. As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I would love to watch Derek Jeter playing shortstop for 3-4 more years while earning just a little less than his teammate at 3rd Base. Six errors last year won him a Gold Glove, but he rarely threw the ball from the hole, and his range was limited. Clearly, a Yankee icon during the Championship Years of 1996 - 2000, but after 2010 it is obvious that his skills have diminished. If the Sox can sign him for one year at 8 Million, that would be great. He could then get his 3000 Hit in a Boston uniform, which would frost a few fans in NY. The way I see it, the Yankees buy Pennants and W.S. Championships, but do not pay has-beens for what they have done in the past. Good for them. Jeter, you have FIVE World Series Rings. Bill Russell has ELEVEN. Not sure he ever asked for a raise after he turned 37. Your greed is destroying your legacy. Typical in this day and age.

Jeter's coverage is shrinking for defense and RBI is lowest in his career for offense, what's Jeter's bargain power?

  • ron Ingaldi - 13 years ago

robert ascenzi complains about ticket prices now. if jeter gets his wish , what do you think ticket prices will do then. i love jeter, but 15 mil a year for a guy who is gonna be 37!! more than fair.

you can't blame hank and hal for protecting themselves. they are owners and they have the risk of losing money in a business. if Jeter helped Hank and Hal and George become billionaires, so be it. they take the risks of losing money by being an owner of a business. Not every franchise in sports makes money. Some lose money and the owners don't go after the players to help them recoup their losses when they do lose money. why should hal and hank be responsible for taking care of jeter? the texas rangers just went bankrupt. do you see the players chipping in to bring them back to solvency? please, don't tell me hal should be thankful to jeter. the yanks have been around for a century and whether jeter was here or not, they will go on.

the three year 45 million is more than fair. He has been paid enough to be the 'face of the franchise'. don't you think 189 million covers that? or should we have to pay him again for what he did in the past? lets get real everybody, Utley and Hanley Ramirez are much better players and they make less and they are much closer to their primes. Suck it up jeter, 15 million is too much as it is. As a fan, you are one of my favorite but enough is enough. You are not worth 20MM, and you will not be playing at a level that is high enough to warrant a 20MM salary 4 years from now. Don't embarrass yourself. I can barely get a seat close to the field anymore because of these ridiculous salaries, when i do go to a game, i can't enjoy a few beers because of these ridiculous salaries.

As far as I am concerned, DEREK JETER is the yankees, without him there is no more yankees..If they nickle and dime him, I will never go to a yankee game again and never turn on the tv to watch a yankee game. He has a clean reputation and has made alot of money just being out on the field. HE IS MY ICON

Jeter should be ashamed of himself. This is a very generous contract offer.

Jeter is a good ball player who is slowing down. He's batting number 1 cause he hits into too many doubleplays. Even with Damon, Jeter was leading off.
As for Captain Jeter....where was he for Giambi or Alex? How come Cash had to beg CC to come to NY to help change the clubhouse? Jeter still " grants " his once a year spring training interview to NY press. His "Mr" Torre stuff showed he was more in tuned with management then his fellow ball players. Even Mattingly fought for longer hair and mustaches.
I am a life long Yankee fan....

I think that three years is fair but I don't think that they should cut his pay 18 million is not to much for what Jeter means to the Yankees your not talking about A-Rod Jeter is the heart of the Yankees and should be paid for it

I love the Yankees but there are a lot of dumb fans to deal with. Jeter doesn't destroy an historic landmark then build a new stadium where the ticket prices are so outrageous us normal fans will never be able to see another game. George, Hank, and Hal do that. They do this by exploiting the greatness of men like Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, etc... Jeter is in a position in 2010 to get reimbursed for those future Yankee earnings in a way that those other great Yankees were not. This did not have to get ugly and public. Jeter is classy and would certainly have kept these negotiations in house but the Yankees are trying to embarrass him and cut him down so they won't have to pay him. It doesn't matter if the fourth, fifth, sixth, whatever years of the contract he ends up playing left or DH or coaching first base, he CANNOT be overpaid by Yankees Inc. Even worse than the fans that have turned on Jeter are the writers who have sold out to the Yankees and are lambasting him undeservedly. Ridiculous!!

How much money did the Yankees spend on that bust Kei Igawa? Now they want to nickle and dime Derek Jeter.

I have been a Yankee fan for close to 70 years. Been attending games since 1950 and have had seasons tickets for almost 30 years having seen every playoff and WS game since 1953. All this tho I live in RI which is a 180 mile drive.
However, if the Yankee brass does not stop belittling and demeaning Jeter, I will never buy another ticket to see the Yankees play. If they could give A-roid a contract that will take him well into his 40s, they should take care of one of the greatest Yankees ever that has donned the Pinstripes. Show him some degree of respect as George would have done.

  • SLarkin - 13 years ago

OK so I prove my point by referring to him as Hal instead of Hank..... he hasn't earned any recognition yet.

  • SLarkin - 13 years ago

Hal is playing hardball to show he is as tough as his father, but he's only showing he's less worthy to be the Yankee "BOSS"

  • SLarkin - 13 years ago

I have only one question. How "rich" has Derek (Matriano and Andy) made Hal Steinbrenner????

  • Ehud Avni - 13 years ago

An over the hill ball player being insulted by an offer that is way too generous, imagine that. Well, old Georgie boy started the trend of over paying players to come to NY, so someone's got to clean up the mess.

  • Howard Isaacs - 13 years ago

Hey, if Jete doesn't want the $15 mil, I'LL take it!

  • robert mccarthy - 13 years ago

Jeter is a NYY icon. Who did he replace? Mattiingly? PLEEEASE! He replaced the MICK! The last great icon of the NYY. $189MM + 3 for 45MM - come on. He cannot go anywhere but NY. Believe me, I love him too but, his camp needs to get a grip. The Yankees gave A-Rod a contract that they would LOVE to take back. Jeter should man up and agree to the deal. Will he - no. They will agree on $18.5 for three years with a fourth year as an option.

  • Show some respect - don't use the press - 13 years ago

The current Yankee offer is more than fair. Their approach to make the offer with the commentary to the media is disrespectful of anyone, but even more disrespectful if you consider that their comments are directed at one of the classiest players in baseball. The Yankees have made this a win/lose proposition from the start saying it would get messy before it did, leaking comments to the media and then indicating they are concerned about his diminishing skills to the media. The Yankees are not helping themselves here with their comments. If they simply made the offer and kept quiet, they would do just fine in the short and long run but instead their posturing to the media serves no one other than themselves.

jeter is the yankees and all they stand for. what derek and his agent have to realize is his numbers have been dropping for the last few years. it happens to everyone. he is definitly one of the most recognized face in america. in the working world, longevity and loyality result in higher wages. sadly that's not true in sports. jeter just came off a $189,000,000 contract . outside of entertainment very few earn 15 mil a year plus endorsements. next time you meet cashman hang your ego at the door because if no team wants you for more than 10 mil he can lower his offer. he can also trade you to kansas city which will affect your free time.stay in ny derek; you own the place

  • RealYankeeFan - 13 years ago

Jeter is an ICON of the team and baseball. He's played the game the right way, no steroids, a winner through and through. He DESERVES respect not in dollars but a much better public endorsement from the Steinbrenners.
What they should've done is offer Jeter 4years for $60million (still 15mil. a year) and to get to the $20mil. range, offer incentives of hitting .300, .320, .330 and .350, plus reaching 200 hits, 25 homers, 80+ rbi's, etc. Plus the standard, MVP or AllStar appearances incentives to reach that $20mil. a year.
NO NEED WHATSOEVER for Cashman to say test the market.
Now on Jeter's end, his camp can say Jeter will set up a special Jeter charity merchandize thing exclusive to Yankee Stadium for a children's charity partnered with the Steinbrenners on it with monies from the contract and assure fans that he'll retire a Yankee on this deal.
Get it done quickly and have a big press conference with the Steinbrenners honoring Jeter for all his service, charity work and representing the Yankee organization with the highest degree of performance and class and declaring once and for all, the Yankee fans hero will retire a Yankee once and for all.

As Bud Fox said to Gordon Getco in the original Wall Street, "How many yachts do you need to ski behind?"...The Jeter supporters are making this out to be a disgraceful offer.....$45 milllion for 3 years disgraceful? Give me a break....The man could live for 5 lifetimes and never spend his savings....It is all about ego and pride.....He'll just have to play beside the $27 milion per year man and suck it up...I have no sympathy for Derek Jeter. He is a great Yankee and a multimillionare manytimes over......As John d Rockefeller said when asked, "How much is enough?" He replied, " just a little bit more." enough already!!!
