Thank you Genevieve & Rodger for your comments. Its great to hear from you and we are really excited about visiting Honduras. I think Utila will be better for our budget and sounds more like our speed for this trip.

Hope to meet you when we are there. :)

My wife and I live on Utila so know a fair amount about it! We also travel to Roatan on occasion as our best friends have a home there.

The differences are significant and each island suits itself to a different clientele.

    Roatan:

Large island with one main road that is very busy so getting around is time consuming.
LOTS of shops for tourists (remember it is a Port of Call for Cruise Lines).
Approximately 1/3 more expense than Utila for just about everything.
Better selection of food/provisions as there are LOTS of Hi-end Ex-Pats there.

    Utila:

Very small island where there are maybe 20 cars/mini pick-ups. Lots of bikes, scooters and motorcycles.
Only one serious tourist shop, so not really a good place to go "shopping!!!"
Inexpensive but good restaurants with quality fare.
Ex-Pats are middle class and and very casual. Shorts and T-Shirts are the daily, and nightly dress.

So, If you like a more stylish environment and shopping then Roatan is for you. If you want quaint and quiet then Utila may be a better fit.

Both islands are very, very nice; just very different!

Roatan all the way! I loved it so much that I moved there from Canada in 2007. Laid back atmosphere, beautiful Caribbean beaches, friendly people, and as safe as anywhere else in the world you may want to check out. I've also visited Antigua, Guatemala, and Copan both offered a fantastic cultural experience.
