Do you care about Brett Favre's consecutive games streak?

A Quarterbacks greatest asset is availability. It doesn't matter how great you are if you can't play.

For those who say he hurt his team by playing to continue the streak, take a look at some of his backups. I would roll with a one-armed, gimpy ankle, broken pinkie Favre over a completely healthy T-Jack anytime, everytime. Now, we all know why that group flew down to Mississippi to talk Favre into coming back, because they had been witnessing Tavaris as the first string QB for all of training camp and knew he couldn't complete a high enough percentage of his passes to sustain drives.

Sorry Matt but you are wrong. Favre hurt the Minnesota Vikings this year big time by playing injured to keep the streak alive. Than with the Jets, he started off great, got injured, and played hurt and how did the Jets do in the post season? In Green Bay, he cost them the NFC Championship his last year because he did a stupid throw and the Giants won. Favre's streak will never be broke not because it is hard, but because most players are smart enough to know when to sit out when injured. Favre was stupid by playing injured this year. How come he isn't selling footballs with "Most INT's Tossed"? How come the NFL doesn't post that fact with him anymore? How come ESPN made sure to leave that stat off his career lists last night? What doesn't want to see he has a high TD/INT ratio?

Stephen, well, maybe it is short sighted. I don't think so, but fair enough. Of course it's hard to accomplish. Impressive durability? Totally agree. But so what? He could go out and throw 4 picks, and it's still one more game for the streak. Woo hoo! I guess these playing streaks in and of themselves have just never done anything for me. Something like Unitas' touchdown per game streak, or again, DiMaggio's amazing 56, seem infinitely more impressive to me because of their actual accomplishments in those consecutive games. Not just the fact that they were there.

Why is the media so in love with this? BECAUSE IT IS RIDICULOUSLY HARD TO ACCOMPLISH-- Are you kidding me? A huge football fan and you do not care that an absolute gladiator just played his last game, ending one of the most impressive streaks ever?? And to say the same about Ripken's streak.. That is incredibly short sided of you Greg-- These accomplishments are unbelievably impressive displays of durability and the will to win.. And for others to say that his streak was a self-indulgence, he is one of the best qb's to ever play- if he was not the best fit for the team it is on the coach's shoulders to bench him and play someone who is better, and during his streak there has obviously not been a fitting replacement- when rodgers was ready he was named the man, not because he was better or brett was bad, but because he was younger and it was time for him to take over.. The backlash is obviously all based off of people getting tired of him waffling, but you probably wouldnt have that opinion if 20 sports radio hosts didnt tell you to think that-

Stephen, get a grip. I am a huge football fan, and I could give a fig about the streak. It's one of those things that makes you go, "Wow, that's a long time" and then go back to your dinner. :) Worth the OJ-in-the-white-Bronco coverage ESPN was giving it last night? Um, no. Just like Ripken's streak, why is the media so in love with stuff like this? Aside from the obvious that ESPN has 24/7 time to fill. DiMaggio's streak is completely different. It's a streak of incredible accomplishment. Favre's and Ripken's are just streaks of being upright.

Unfortunately the question included his name. Anyone who says they don't care about the streak is an idiot, but unfortunately people will look at it more as whether they care it was Brett Favre or not.

While not at all identical, I guess you could draw some parallels to Barry Bonds home run record. As a baseball fan you HAVE to care, but do you care it was Bonds, or like Bonds, or care about Bonds at all? Chances are you don't, and it's entirely justified.

No, I don't care about the streak. Brett Favre is a selfish individual who only care about his record and himselh not the team. The team lost the season because of the Brett Favre saga from the beginning. I Do appreciate what he has done for the NFL but he is just another pro player whom refuse to accept the fact that his time is up and needs to step aside for the good of the team. I just hope he finally realize that there is a franchise in question not him alone. Brett Has accomplished a lot more than any average player. He will have a future in the NFL. Just let it go Brett

The streak is what is at question here...not necessarily WHO has the streak. We're all a little Favre-fatigued, but his streak is ridiculous. When it's P. Manning in 6 years, everyone will be lining up to spit-shine his cleats...

  • Matt - 13 years ago

Exactly Stephen. People who do not appreciate what he did for the teams he played for are not football fans. Or they are seasonal fans at most. Having a dependable QB is the dream of every team. Yes, he threw alot of interceptions but he won many more games than he lost for those teams. He is the last of the "cowboys" and will be missed.
And his record is 321 games, not 297 as playoffs and super bowls count.
The media made everyone of these "Favre haters" by constantly having his name in the papers/websites, he didnt ask for it.

  • Matt - 13 years ago

The question wasn't "do I think it is note worthy" or d"o I think it was a great feat" it was "Do I care" No, I don't care.

  • Rod - 13 years ago

Stephen, you have no clue. You know why people don't respect Favre's streak? Take a look at how many games he lost for his team while playing hurt, just for the sake of "the streak." He's a diva - his streak would have ended a long time ago if he was putting his team and his teammates first. Yes, Favre is one of the greatest QB's of all time, but he's also one of the most self-centered, me-first primadonnas the league has ever seen. And by the way, you ruined any credibility you had by including soccer as one of the four main sports - do you live in another country or are you just delusional? :)

  • Stephen - 13 years ago

If you say that you do not care about the Favre streak you are not a real football fan, and probably not a sports fan for that matter. This streak ranks up there with Ripken's consecutive game streak and Dimaggio's hitting streak. Football is the most physically punishing of the 4 main sports (football, baseball, basketball, and soccer) and the guy played in 321 straight games (including playoffs)! That streak lasted 20 seasons, and the only reason that anyone would say they do not care is because they are not Favre fans-- GROW UP! Just because you are not a fan of the guy personally does not mean you should disrespect his on field accomplishments.
