What do you think about secession celebrations?

As is normal in polls, the choices leave me flat. We celebrate Independence Day -- even though it was, in essence, a formal declaration of a pre-existing, undeclared war -- because of what it stood for: Freedom. It was a very imperfect freedom, to be sure -- and there is legitimate doubt on whether the war was necessary -- but it was the dawn of a new era. South Carolina's succession was all about preserving the horrible institution of slavery -- and we cannot sugar coat that in phrases like "the noble cause" or "states’ rights." It should be no more celebrated than South African whites should celebrate the birth of apartheid.
