I've been reading Tolkien and Martin since I was in grade school. I can read and reread their books and still find something new. A number of books on here that I am going to check out.
I don't know that I would pick the religious works. I'm not a fan of organized religion.
Some great choices. I would take Homer's Odyssey but not his Iliad-- I read it twenty years or so ago and did finish but was unable to "get" it. I'd definitely enjoy studying the bible and the Qu'ran. I'd also take some Shakespeare with me but Romeo and Juliet has never been one of my real favorites-- not to say I don't love it for what it is, but if I was gonna have some real time to study Shakespeare I'd want the Henriad histories-- the Richard II, Henry IV & Henry V-- a few tragedies, a few comedies, and all the romances.
Not a Tolkien fan but I have promised a college friend I'd have another look at them.
Some Faulkner, and some black American literature and history. Actually, I'd really enjoy a chance to study American history-- especially the Puritan and the Civil War periods in depth.
