It couldn't have been Faraday, because Dan time travelled to 1974 and in 1974 the Dharma Initiative wa already coming and going from the island which means that the pendulum had already been thought of.
As far as we know Alvar Hanso was not a scientist (was he?).
Charles Widmore was the leader of the Others and lived on the island untill he was exiled after the Purge (on the day of his depart we see Ben and Richard with Alex at the Barracks).
I don't think Jacob had the necessary scientific knowledge.
So I think it was Gerald Degroot or... someone else.
