We've all seen 'em in the movies, but have you ever actually eaten in a high-end French restaurant in the US?

I have eaten in French restaurants outside the US (St. Martin, Helsinki), but never in the continental US.

Twice... once for an interview trip and again as a guest of a business partner. The first time, I was about 21 years old and a hillbilly way out of his league until I found a lady bug (still crawling!) in my mesclun after which the maitr d took charge of making my evening enjoyable. The second time, my partner struck up a conversation with an inebriated customer at the next table who was an engineer with the... ugh... city waste water treatment plant. On his second bottle of wine, he detailed in a loud voice the operation (and mis-operation) of the city sewage plant. The maitr d again took charge, actually took away the charge, and thanked us profusely for our patience. The food was fantastic both times (and the salad was certainly fresh!), and I left with life-time memories well beyond eating escargot. I would happily repeat either dinner if only I could. :)

There is absolutely nothing appealing about any French cuisine I've read about. It all is either ham (can't have it), contains creme (can't have it either) .... eeesh. I just can't encompass all the ways it is unappealing it is to me. For others? Bon Appetit!

If I stumble upon them - I don't look for them, but do not have an aversion! I am 42 - they remind me of super-special occasions as a kid.

I've eaten at the Escoffier (the Culinary Institute of America's classic French restaurant/classroom). It's the only way I've been able to afford the all-out high-class French dining experience. It was for my birthday several years ago, and it was wonderful. I've not managed to make it back there yet, more's the pity.
