How much influence did your mother (or equivalent) have on how you cook today?

You had as an option: "She rocked. I didn't really pick up on it, but maybe some day." I picked that one, but it wasn't accurate. I wish it were a possibility. She was great and I wanted to learn, and did learn some things, but she died unexpectedly - so no "some day".

My mother fed a family of 5 on a shoestring budget. We never ate gourmet, but we never went without a meal. She never made anything spicey and it wasn't until years later that I learned it's because she was raised that salt & pepper were all the spices & herbs she should ever need. ;) As a result, I've formed my career & cooking tastes & habits around NEVER having to live on a budget. We eat what we want, when we want. We go out one the weekends when the mood strikes us. Fortunately (for that kind of lifestyle) we don't have children or things would be MUCH different.

My mother doesn't have an patience in cooking, she doesn't want to cook her tomato sauce until it sweetens and so she uses American cheese to cut the acid. It makes it orange and goopy, and you would probably need a paint scraper to get it off the walls. >.
