I am part-filipina and part of our culture includes eating with our hands, especially meals with rice in them. There's a method: Basically, we take some of the main meal, put it on the rice and make a mound that we can scoop up with our four fingers, then we place the thumb behind the food and push it off the fingers and into the mouth.

I live and work with Indians who truly believe that food prepared and eaten with hands is far better. After 9 years I am VERY used to doing this and will forget at times to pick my manners.
