I had the pleasure of working with Justin Severino on several farm dinners and special events he put on in Pittsburgh and at a regional winery. His commitment to creative menu design and local sourcing is truly amazing, as is his work ethic and ability to build a working kitchen from scratch and to emcee his multi-course dinners with style, humor, and intelligence. His meat tastes real good, too. Elements is the best thing going in Pittsburgh.

  • EG - 13 years ago

I had to vote for Daniel Giusti, I don't know him, but apparently we share the same last name!

  • Mary - 13 years ago

Joe, I have to agree with you. My family and I just voted for Sonja, (who's food is excellent), and her numbers did not even move. Mr. Gaus's numbers are moving an an incredible rate. I hate to call anyone a cheat, but.......

  • Joe - 13 years ago

@LM, what are you talking about? Justin has been climbing since last week!?!? Are you the one hacking the site to make David Gaus the winner? He has jumped 10.00% since lunch today!!!

  • jacklyn - 13 years ago

just ate at justins restuarant in downtown pittsburgh for lunch the food and the menu was to say the least remarkable .

  • chris - 13 years ago

Justine has not been at the bottom of the polls .he has been in the running the whole time! The votes he is getting are all legitimate and DESERVED!!!!! HE IS AN AWESOME CHEF HIS FOOD IS FABULOUS!

  • LM - 13 years ago

How in only a few days did Justin leap to the top and achieve 25% of the vote after he had been sitting in the bottom at 9%? I believe that someone has hacked the poll.

It is ashame that there are people in our society that can't be Happy when others have accomplish something. Justine Severino is already a Winner. He got where he is the old fashion way. Hard work, dedication, and sacrafice. His food is unique and fabulous. He deserves all the respect and recognition he gets. Elements your lucky to have him.Good Luck Justine!!

  • dee - 13 years ago

OBVIOUSLY there are some people that are jealous of Justins Accomplishments....

  • Scott - 13 years ago

Justin Severino's food is amazing.. def has my vote. Elements in Pittsburgh is by far the best restaurant ive been too.

  • Remy - 13 years ago

Birch and Barley is the toast of DC-- and Kyle is at the helm. His imagination and creativity are almost as unmatched as his work ethic. It's nice to see the admiration and respect he's received over the past year refected on the national scale. To put it bluntly- Kyle's the man.

  • Aimee - 13 years ago

Bayou Bakery is one of the best quick eats in D.C. If you're in the mood for a bit of flavor and zest, I would highly recommend David Guas' place. One of the best chef's I know.

  • Dave B - 13 years ago

I am from Macedonia Ohio and spent the weekend in Pittsburg, me and my wife went on a recommendation to Elements, where we experienced the best dinner we ever had. I highly reccomend Elements and hope you cast your vote for Justin Severino!

  • Pat Lepre - 13 years ago

We went to Blackfish last weekend, it was absolutley one of the best meals I have had and the atmosphere was excellent

  • Gina - 13 years ago

Chip Roman's Blackfish is truly a gem in Conshohocken, PA and one of the most innovative menus I've ever seen and tasted.

Jeff Michaud creates simple, unpretentious Italian magic at Osteria and Amis, my favorite places in Philly.

Kyle Bailey's Birch and Barley is one of my favorite places in DC whose culinary talents are out of this world.

This poll is Sophie's Choice for me!! But they are all deserving and true artists~

  • Ryan - 13 years ago

I was just in DC last month and stopped by Birch & Barley. Chef Kyle's food was original, memorable, and delicious. I have a new favorite restaurant.

  • Dan - 13 years ago

Just left Chef Justin's Elements in Pittsburgh. Excellent from charcuterie to creme brulee.

  • grace - 13 years ago

Jeff Michaud at Osteria is amazing! Extremely inventive and creative cooking. Pizza really can't get better.

  • Cathy - 13 years ago

Kyle Bailey is the epitome of what it means to be a "Best New Chef" He is on the cutting edge of the Food and Beer phenomenon and is constantly working with his crew to make people re-think fine dining. As a NY transplant now living in DC I've been to Birch and Barley and Allen and Delancey and I have only seen his food get better and better. He and his wife seem to live every moment of their lives working to producing great culinary experiences for their guests. I can't believe Birch and Barley didn't get a James Beard shout out! The least he deserves is for us to all vote for him.

  • HPM - 13 years ago

Bayou Bakery is the greatest thing (north of Louisiana). Southern transplants can truly appreciate the food here. Fresh hot beignets and chickoree coffee OMG!!!

  • Katharine - 13 years ago

Go Sonja! Not only is Dinette delicious, it defines ethical business practices. They grow a lot of their ingredients on the roof and are truly committed to sustainability. I have eaten there many, many times, and have never had a mediocre dish. She hits it out of the park 100% of the time. Her beef carpaccio is The Best. And I would like to also point out that only 8 women out of 100 chefs were nominated. Let's hear it for the girls!

  • amyc - 13 years ago

Justin Severino is a master of charcuterie. Everything I've tasted has been amazing. The menu is elegant yet down to earth. Pittsburgh is lucky to have him.

  • Michelle - 13 years ago

Sonja really is a great chef! Every dish she prepares is fresh and delicious!

  • Funny - 13 years ago

Sounds like Sonja's supporters are confusingly over-defensive and bitter.
As a neutral and respectful reader that knows nothing about Sonja, I didn't read her excerpt as an "ode-to-breadsticks". Recognition on this poll should be more than enough to indicate that Sonja is a top-chef with many culinary accolades under her belt. If I were to overreact as much as some on this panel, perhaps I'd bark and argue about how David Guas' eggplant colored Harley has zero-influence on his cooking, or that if I were to ever find a hair in my soup at Birch & Barley I should blame Kyle Bailey's goatee. Everyone should relax and praise these great chef's for their accomplishments! Bravo to all (including Sonja's delectable breadsticks)!

  • Kat - 13 years ago

Sonja is best known for her bread sticks??! Sonja Finn, a James Beard Award nominee (twice) is well known for her visionary efforts in working with local and sustainable food; even serving produce from the restaurant's roof-top garden...

How ridiculous! No wonder Food & Wine's subscription rate is plummeting...

  • Maggie (from yucatan, mexico) - 13 years ago

My husband and I really loved Kyle's Food! It was super delicious!!! I'll definitely go to birch and barley when I come back to D.C.!!! Loved it!

  • Faye Rausch - 13 years ago

No doubt about it Kyle Bailey is a force to be reckoned with! I've dealt with my fair share of Executive Chefs, and Kyle is cream of the crop! Where his personality is unassuming (gentle, calm, quirky, funny!) , the skill of his culinary expertise is not. He and wife Tiffany have a passion for food, they live and breathe the most enjoyable thing that sustains our life, and they make it memorable! If there is anyone who deserves for their star to shine this year, it's Kyle. With NYC already under his belt, he takes on DC with a young career and has so much positive potential to make huge waves in the industry. Go Kyle!!!

  • Jason Shamblin - 13 years ago

Kyle Bailey is a masterful chef, and it is no surprise to see him nominated for such a prestigious honor. His creations are as fun and interesting as they are delicious; always with a unique twist, and always with an appreciation for the best ingredients and incredible presentation. He is one of the main reasons why Birch & Barley is our favorite restaraunt for date night, and why it is a mandatory destination for our out of town friends and family when they visit. He is a command presence in the kitchen, always directing, coaching and helping his highly skilled team create order from chaos, yet seemingly never too busy to check on your dining experience if you are lucky enough to get a seat at the Chef's counter. There are several reasons why Birch & Barley won Best New Restaraunt in D.C. in 2010, which is no easy task in a city that is foodie paradise. Kyle is definately one of the cornerstones of their continued success.

  • Ty Manegdeg - 13 years ago

Kyle Bailey! Best hidden gem! Finally getting recognized for delivering excellent food one after the other!

  • RUSSELL FRIEDMAN - 13 years ago
