Thomas Jefferson- he designed Monticello and the University of Virginia, both of which fit so beautifully into the environment.
Theodore Roosevelt- he created the first National Bird Preserve, established the Forest Service, and created 194 million acres of national forests, parks and areas of special interest.
Franklin Roosevelt- The Civilian Conservation Corps not only provided jobs and food for starving Americans, it also spurred a nationwide love of the outdoors.
Lyndon Johnson- introduced the Highway Beautification Act of 1965, Clean Air legislation, Water Pollution Control legislation, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and the Wilderness Act.
Richard Nixon- Established the Environmental Protection Agency.
Jimmy Carter- expanded national park system, developed energy policies, tried to crank up car fuel efficiency.
Bill Clinton- created 17 new national monuments covering 4.6 million acres, tried to ratify Kyoto, banned road building in 60 million acres of national forest.
George Bush- he designated the world's largest protected marine area and built a really nice green house in Crawford.
Barack Obama - so much initial hope and positive rhetoric but stymied by Congress on efforts to combat climate change, which now threatens to pull funding for EPA and NOAA
