  • Basketball Spectator - 13 years ago

GOhattrick8..........The best post in all the above, BRAVO!

  • GOhattrick8 - 13 years ago

The man or women who has done his/her best... is a success, even though the world may write him/her down a failure.

This describes every athlete who has worked their hardest.

  • Renee' Jordan - 13 years ago

oh my, I cannot even believe the comments I just read. Can you say ridiculous? These kids would look at these and feel terrible, do you people even think about THEM when you post these comments? I don't think I've ever seen anything so pathetic in my life! I don't know Gabe, but I do know a couple of his team mates (Dillan and Lucas), and so I was rooting for Sumner to win in the tourneys. He is a great player, and Garet is my hometown player. He is an awesome kid who has had a ball in his hand pretty much since he could hold one since his entire family is all very good at ball. I feel that before you decide to post things on here that are demeaning to each of these players, you should think about how you would feel if someone did this to you. Its not fair for so called "fans" to be taking away from something that these kids feel so strongly about. High school only last four short years and for alot of people and the players, waiting for the basketball season to come around is a very big deal....its what everyone looks forward to. So I guess what I don't understand is why any of you who were being negative would have to turn something that is such an honor for all of the hardwork and dedication that these players portrayed, into something that may possibly make them feel badly about themselves. All I am asking is that before you ruin something that is so special, especially coming from the small towns, PLEASE consider how your comments may affect the KIDS you are writing about!! They ABSOLUTELY do not deserve to be degraded in the way that you ADULTS are degrading them. If you are such great fans, then state something positive about everyone involved or keep your disrespectful comments to yourself!!! THANK YOU!!!

  • Sarah Willson - 13 years ago

I cannot believe some of the comments I have read! Obviously those three players could help some of you with "good sportsmanship"....do not degrade players because you don't like a comment that was posted!! Some of you are very disrespectful and shouldn't be allowed to leave some of the comments I read! All 3 players of the week have worked hard to achieve their place on their teams! I am almost positive they all show good sportsmanship and excellent character on and off the court! I am very proud of the teams I have seen play this year, however, Garet Beal is the best all around high school basketball player I have probably ever seen and watching him work with his team is very impressive! He could showboat but chooses not to because he probably knows working as a team will get him a lot further than working alone on his team! I have never witnessed such skill from high school players as I have this year and am very proud of them all! That being said, my vote went for Garet. No one can deny or compare the mad skills he has when it comes to basketball!

  • Downeaster - 13 years ago

This is not a popularity contest as being treated. We are not talking about who is the better player or who practices more. We are talking about the three plays . Gabe, hands down.

  • Garet's fan - 13 years ago

I hope neither Garet or Gabe read these comments. They shouldn't have to be engulfed in this negativity!! They are just kids doing something they love. I, of course, voted for Garet but I believe both boys are great players.
I'm pretty sure this comment section is intended to be a place to write POSITIVE comments not sling mud. SHAME ON YOU!!!

  • Deanna - 13 years ago

This is about the players, not the voters.

    That said, Gabe should win.

  • Rondo - 13 years ago

    WOW !!!!
LETS CALM DOWN. this is about the most rediculous selfish childish chating I've ever read. Channel 5 news and Tim Throckmorton do this to give some ball players a little extra TV time. If you can't be nice about this I'm sure the TV 5 crew will be looking at all of us a saying that this will be the last time we include Sumner High or JBHS. It is rediculous soGROW UP. Come on the web page place your vote make a nice comment about who you voted for and be done . By all means come back several times and check the voting and the comments and again reply. But do it respectfully. And stop making yourself sound CHILDISH. Enough said!!!

  • TheGoose - 13 years ago

Gabe all the way! Come on, Sumner! ^____^

  • Scooby - 13 years ago

This whole thing is getting out of hand. There are 3 videos of 3 children who had exceptional plays during tournament week. I'm sure they're all great kids so there is no need to bash any of them. Let the kids play and have fun!

  • Jane Doe - 13 years ago

As far as Garet giving up, maybe he did. A lot rests on that kids shoulders. He probably felt as though he let his whole community, and a good friend and teammate who has passed on, down. He's a kid. Give him a break. As Amy said it's emotional, and a lot of people depend on you, especially when you play male ball for the "Portahs and Islandahs".

  • Jane Doe - 13 years ago

Bloodflint is the rude/biased one? "Sumner Tiger" was the one to begin with the vulgar language and phrases. The fact that Garet is going to prep school is strictly heresay. Until you talk to Garet personally about his intentions or reasoning might I suggest not bashing the kid on a public site? Key word there being "kid". Whether you're an adult or another child you should be ashamed of yourself. His heart is with the team. If it wasn't he probably would have been in prep school his Freshman year, which would have been what's best for him alone. If you had Garet's opportunities with his talents, what would you do? If he makes a name for himself he has the potential to end up playing big time ball with the possibility of a successful career. With that being said, would it be better for him to play JBHS ball or go to a school where a 6' 5" guard/point guard can be groomed into a pro baller? As for his dunk, it's HIGH SCHOOL BALL. You can't hang on the rim and make it fancy as you could in pick up ball. No comparison. Garet doesn't need to boast himself and his team after a dunk as extraordinary play has become expected of their whole team. I have only seen Garet become cocky one time, against Sumner, when there was a high school GRADUATE sitting in the stands cheering 'OVERRATED'! What I would have to say to that gentleman is Grow up or Go home. You're badgering a teenage kid who's better than you'll ever dream of being. Jealousy is a hard thing to deal with we know. In the end though it does come down to the play. I'm sure if you go back through tapes you could find Garet doing exactly what Gabe did that day. I think anybody with any ability probably could and as far as height making Garet... I would enjoy a match up between him and far shorter, female ball player Cindy Blodgett in her high school days. You can be tall, you still need skill, especially to play the 1 or 2 at 6' 5".

  • Amy Norton - 13 years ago

I can't belive you all. These players are all great. If you think that your bashing comments help, you're wrong. Grow up. They are kids. It gets emotional. Support your teams, but you don't have to be mean. All of these players have 4 others on the floor. They wouldn't have won if they didn't. My vote was for Gabe. My son is on the team. I'm sure that's how everyone voted. Sumner hadn't made it to Eastern Maine finals in 38 years. Big accomplishment. Congratulations to all the players. Remember when you open your mouth your comments reflect your community which includes your kids. Just be proud of the athletes.

  • Wow - 13 years ago

This is flat out ridiculous, I voted for Garet because I have personally seen the hard work that he has put into his game. He did not give up, he does not give up, he goes hard 100% of the time. Now, Gabe's play was nice, he is a very skilled ball handler, but nothing compares to the power of a dunk.

  • Down East Girl... - 13 years ago

Everybody needs to calm down..... take a step back, and know that both our basketball teams are phenomenal teams...As for this 'play' of the week, give it to both those boys.. They both have amazing ball abilities in their own ways...If I were as tall as Garrett, I would dunk the ball too...and had the skills as Gabe, I would scream by people too....and yes, I would probably showboat too...Thats the Game! Thats why we all Love it and thats why we will all go back and watch it again and again. So stop taking everything so personal people....what do you think our boys would think of us if they read these comments everybody is making about them and getting all angry and uptight about a game they just LOVE to play...Its about the Game boys and girls...play nice...

  • jane mcbride - 13 years ago

sp11 for your info. the Royals played Lee in a scrimmage in woodland to get ready for the tourney and Lee beat them 3 points without Justin alley......The royals have an awsome team, they play team ball, played their hearts out this season, They truly have the Championship team..they had 2 players starting with injuries,1 with a smack in the nose, and a lot of pressure to win, they had a great season...I voted for Garet, am a Royal Fan always will be ... if you read through the AAU basketball write ups Garet is 1 of the top 2 players in the state, and if he goes to a private school to better his dreams thats his buisness.....if i remember correctly sumner had 3 losses this season and 2 of them was to who THE ROYALS !!!! if you went to the game which i did, you saw them in action this season....

  • Who Cares - 13 years ago

Flat out how many kids can really dunk in any class ball let alone class D. You rarely see anyone Dunk a ball in High School so my vote goes to Garet Beal. Anyone can pick up a loose ball and dribble from one end of the floor to the other and lay it in the basket when nobody is guarding you, and as for the three pointers made. That is a great accomplishment but that isn't a single play...it's seven individual plays. Make a compilation of plays for Gabe or Garet and either one of them would win. I agree this is supposed to be about the play not the person making the play. Straight up Garet made the best play. Oh and Tiger Fan, just because a Garet is taller than Gabe doesn't make what he does any easier...how many 6' 5" high school players do you see playing guard/point guard. He can handle the ball as well as most smaller guys that traditionally should be quicker and better at handling a ball. Gabe is a great ball handler too but my point being if he was 6'5" I highly doubt you would see him handling the ball. In the end this is nothing more than a popularity contest because clearly most people are voting for their local player and not the better play, and everyone has a right to their own opinion. Don't take it the wrong way because obviously all three kids are great athletes and deserve recognition. It certainly seems it's between Gabe and Garet for the win. May the Best PLAY win!!

  • Courtney Rae - 13 years ago

did u ever think that some colleges u might want to go to require that u attend a private school, maybe it doesn't have anything to do with basketball y he is going even if so class d schools dont get looked at much for college ball, but who says he going to do it, even if so they are team players they can manage without him ya hes a good asset to their team, but really he needs to do whats best for him its not all about basketball

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

it does not matter were u go or were u play if u r on that team u play team ball and if he thinks that going there would be better for him it might be

  • Courtney Rae - 13 years ago

ok than i have seen about a 5'4" girl shut down a girl over 6 foot so really height has some advantages but as long as u have someone that can defend that person than its nothing

  • sp11 - 13 years ago

all the power to him, but its not right. if hes this "team player" he would think things through and stick with his team through thick and thin. and im not denying his skills, he should be good being he is 6'5'' and has done nothing but play ball. id just like to see him stick with his home team and accomplish what he can there. it would be better for him.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

so what if he goes thats up to him and no one should get made about it he has sick skills

  • sp11 - 13 years ago

ive seen better dunks playing pick up ball. just wasnt as impressive as people seem to think. garet never went up against a 6'7'' defender like that, besides in the game against lee in woodland. but my vote still goes to gabe, hes probably not gonna take off to private school like i hear garet is going to do. now thats a big kick in the teeth to the team if he does.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

get a life he ran right throw wow impressive. garet dunked it so much more then running throw a bunch of poeple

  • Courtney Rae - 13 years ago

i have seen small people go through defenders all the time like i said i used to play, used to see it every game

  • sp11 - 13 years ago

they both showboated after their plays. but gabe's play was more impressive. they were up against a #2 see, being that they were the #6 seed, and had to drive through a group of defenders, while garet got a wide open lane to the bucket. of course emotions are going to show, its basketball. gabe had every right to do that, he was taking control of his team and showing their will to win. and bloodflint, just hang it up. we all get the point where you are from.

  • Courtney Rae - 13 years ago

just to clear it up that wasn't just a lay up by garet it was when he dunked the ball and got the rest of his team pumped so my vote is for garet, and he didn't give up in eastern maines game i was there and if u knew anything about basketball u would of known what happened with that game jb did great in that game considering how it went.. im not from jonesport but i know bad calls when i see them, i used to play myself and know how calls can be sometimes and how i effects the players on the team... so ur pretty rude for saying he just gave up in eastern maines..

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

nope its not im being a man and not being a little boy im watching my mouth and not using words i could be so grow up u little piggy

  • Basketball Spectator - 13 years ago

Bloodflint .......Grow a pair........that is all you have in your vocabulary arsenal to choose from. LOL! I was always told not to sling mud with pigs - I would just get dirty and the pigs would like it. It has been proven once again.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

theres a point when u jest give up whats the point Garet has the skill and the love to play ball and he does play team ball and hes going to win

  • royalsfan08 - 13 years ago

most of the people here are probably voting for their locals.
as for the people who are making it more about the players than the play, to whom i originally commented, i don't understand how you don't agree that garet would beat gabe. in both JB vs. Sumner games, garet's team beat gabe's team. so either gabe's team took away from gabe's talent, or garet's team had no use for garet and he contributed nothing.
but i think based on the videos, jade, garet, and gabe are all impressive players.
i voted for garet because the score he made was a very impressive play and there was no showboating afterward. it came down to him and gabe, for me. gabe got cocky after his make, garet didn't.

  • sp11 - 13 years ago

Did anyone else see Garet give up in the eastern maine game? Cause I did, that's not team ball, that's giving up on your team. But Gabe, even with his team down 20 plus points never gave up, he played his all till the final buzzer. Good game, and whole season Gabe and the rest of the Sumner Tigers!

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

so a lay-up is not play but running down down court is mmmm im jest telling the truth so grow a pair and grow up

  • Basketball Spectator - 13 years ago

Bloodflint - you are biased and rude - There was absolutely nothing spectacular about Garet's play on that video presented. It was a lay-up from a ball passed to him and nothing more. What was presented in his video is standard operating procedure and is at best what is typically expected and received from any player on the team. There was nothing outstanding in that video.

  • Annie - 13 years ago

All three plays were impressive. Overall Gabe takes the win. He also played a fantastic game tonight. He really covered that court. Nice work Gabe! To the end of tremendous tournament play.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

Garet Beal plays team ball he did not run half the court bye him self he plays as a team so SUCK ON THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tiger Fan - 13 years ago

Garet beal ain't got shit on Gabe! When it comes to performance gabes got it! I went to the jonesport eastern maine game and I didn't see garret do anything at all to spectaular and gabe in his eastern maine game had muliple steals points and rebounds! Soooo suck on the one!!

  • VICK - 13 years ago

Jade 8 for 9 three pointers (BROKEN RECORD) nuf said...

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

well i have watched the plays and Garet Beal is the winer

  • Basketball Spectator - 13 years ago

Regardless of which school you are from - which boy is your hometown boy - or how much they play their heart out the whole season- judging by these three videos - which is what you are supposed to be judging this "Play of the week" by - the kid from Sumner should win this. It is not a competition of school vs. school or player versus player - it is judged by the actual play that is being presented on these three videos - Come up people - play fair or do not play at all.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

well if Gabe is so small wouldn't that means he leaves his small heart on the court and size does not matter its how u use it

  • Tigerfan - 13 years ago

Garet is a man child no wonder y he can dominate against normal sized kids.. Im not taking anything away frm him but size helps you out alot.. Gabe is a small kid leading an undersized sumner team n he dors an awesome job.. Plus he leaves it all out on the court including his giant heart!! Go tigers!!

  • royalsfan08 - 13 years ago

all the comments about gabe stand for garet...garet works all the time at getting better at basketball. he is a great kid in school, he earns good grades, he has a lot of friends, none of the kids at JB dislike garet. he shows great team spirit, is a team player, practices good sportsmanship, and he exudes good character on and off the court.

garet beal deserves this more than gabe o'brian, IMO, because if the two matched up, garet would defeat gabe without a problem.

  • Tiger Fan - 13 years ago

Gabe deserves this he is one of the best point guards in high school he has spectacular ball handling skills! Not only has a perfected jumpshot but he can also nail the 3 point clutch shot! One the defensive side he is also amazing gettin steals left and right!

  • T. (Alley) King - 13 years ago

First of all to the Royals as a team, I am very proud of you! Really enjoyed watching the live feed on computer. Now for Garet Beal ,WTG , keep it up, never give up on the game. Finally , I would like to congratulate Coach MacLean on a great season and look forward to more. I was a classmate of Coach and we just happen to win the Class D State Championship the year we graduated(1983) GO ROYALS!

  • Rondo - 13 years ago

G-MAN (Garet Beal) Is the most unselfish player I've ever seen . He would rather assist some one else for two then take it himself. The dunk was a chance to have a little fun in the middle of a clutch game . So go G-MAN !!!

  • SMHS Tiger - 13 years ago

Gabe should win this. He plays with all his heart, at every sport he does. He practices constantly, and plays to his full potential- always working to get better, every day. He stands up for his school, has good sportsmanship, is a good person (in the school and in the community), and is friends with all of his teammates. Being a good player isn't just on the court, on how well you handle the ball, or how any points you make. It's also about you character, your sportsmanship, etc. Gabe has all of these things, and he should get this!

  • SANDRA DEE WATSON - 13 years ago

yaya baby got to vote for my home town boy.....GARET BEAL....GO ROYALS

  • Michele Libby - 13 years ago

I voted for Garet...he is such an amazing athlete! Awesome season Royals! We are all so proud of each and every one of you...looking forward to next season already!

  • Tiger - 13 years ago

The votes are going up non-stop something is wrong. someone is cheating the system. This poll needs to be checked

  • Jane Doe - 13 years ago

I voted for Garet Beal, but I think that Mitch Worcester's half court buzzer beater, which was on of 10 three pointers against Jonesport-Beals blew away any of the plays nominated for play of the week... Sorry Garet. Gotta call a spade a spade.

  • bloodflint - 13 years ago

Garet ur there JBHS all the way

  • Tiger - 13 years ago

We'll see about that! Go Gabe! Go Sumner!

  • Rob Peabody - 13 years ago

definatly garret the other two dont count!!!!!!
if i had the option id say lee smith but roayals are number one so say sumthin if u wana!!!! #$%^&!!!!!!!

  • Billy Merchant - 13 years ago

Garet is an amazing young athlete that gives his all for his team. We could make highlight reels of the great plays he makes. Superb job all season long Royals!!

  • jane mcbride - 13 years ago

We love our Royals...one bad game don't stop how we feel..... GO GARET !!

  • Denise Huntington - 13 years ago

Definitely Gabe O' Brien! This kid plays with all of his heart...and he plays for the TEAM!!!! GO GABE! SUMNER TIGERS!
