I agree with the first poster. For ages 2-2nd grade I made my selections and to me the songs that are most important for that age group are the ones that point directly at Jesus. The world is pointing at Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, Justin Bieber and self, but only Jesus saves, only Jesus can give eternal life. So the seed I think we need to plant in the littlest ones is Jesus Himself. And as was so well put, it spirals up from there :)

I was surprised not to find the hymn "Just As I Am" I have seen many lives surrendered during the playing and singing of this hymn. Just the title alone speaks such a great truth.

This is a great starting list. My 12 year old son strongly prefers singing out of the hymnal as opposed to doing karaoke Christian Contemporary ... he finds those contemporary songs trite and insipid (his words!) and I couldn't agree with him more. Churches keep trying to alter what they do to appeal to young people, but what those young people really want is to feel like this faith is a thread through all the ages, not just the faith of what is popular right now. It will mean so much more to them if they understand that they are part of something that dates back to the foundations of the earth and the creation of the universe, not just back to the Christian Contemporary top 40 of last month. I'm sorry, didn't mean to rant, but I think these dusty hymnals need to be pulled off the shelf and USED.

I think we need to keep the old hymns in our churches. please don't let them become obselete.

So surprised "Be Thou my Vision" only has 2% of the votes. Could there be a better vision for our kids to have?

So glad to see that "Jesus Loves Me" is still loved as much as I do now and did as a child. When my mother would beat me, shave my head and lock me in a closet as a child...I would sing, "Jesus Loves Me"...and when I could read, the school gave me my first bible. As a child and until now, reading God's words are still His love letters to me.
Sad, but true...children and adults love to hear "Jesus Loves Me".
God bless all that you do!

I decided to go with the "kid" theme meaning what songs could a kid really understand and sing. So I was thinking Pre-K through second grade with my votes. I would have a different set of 5 to then build on from there. So like all good curriculum....it spirals up!
