What kind of potting soil do you use?

I use the cheap stuff but it had worked beautifully for me. In some cases I've had to add a little of this or that in order to get the right ph but other than that my cheap stuff(which I found out is actually organic) rocks!

I use a bit of both expensive premium potting soil as well as mixing my own. Usually I get the expensive (non-organic) kind for houseplants or plants that I will not be consuming. For plants that I consume (herbs, veggies, etc), I like to know exactly what is in my potting soil. I either get an organic mix or make my own with peat, perlite and/vermiculite. I then condition the soil with appropriate fertilizer for that particular plant. Additionally, I started vermicomposting this winter and am hoping to have some nutrient rich compost for my veggies this year!

We've been buying potting mix that our local garden center recommends and supplement it if needed. I don't think it's the cheapest or the most expensive.

I buy a premium brand and then mix things in depending on the type of plant and how big the pot is. However, it seems like I always do my potting on a whim and am never quite prepared. I do keep a few bags of soil or compost around and just mix and match. If you have any advice for qualities a good potting soil should have, or a brand to use I would really appreciate it. It seems like everyone has different opinions and often the brands without peat moss, which I prefer to buy are too heavy. What do you do to lighten your soil mix?

I buy the stuff designed for balcony containers that's marked safe for veggies and fruits too, but my final decision is often based on my ability to carry, if I'm solo, since I dont have a car where I live, I go for smallest bag that meets my needs. If it's organic and fancy, great.

I have been buying just plain ol' potting soil and then amending it with compost.

A combination of #2 and #3, with amendments varying depending on the plant.

I try to get whatever looks hippie and organic. But if I can't find it I'll go cheap-o.
