@Mark - I agree, without the Sophos post, I wouldn't have heard of it either, and I certainly wouldn't sign up for anything without know what it was. Granted, I doubt I would poke around their site looking for a privacy policy, but I prefer having a site to poke around in!
It's a sad state that people just sign up for stuff without even knowing what it REALLY does. I would laugh if it was some elaborate scam to harvest credentials.

Dunno about US law, but I'm don't think just "Respect Network Corporation, based in San Francisco, CA." would meet UK requirements; where a commercial site has to show company registration number , address, etc.
It is hard to think why I would sign up to this "service" without knowing what it is offering. Ignoring it is the only way I personally can deal with it. Actually, without the Sophos post I don't think I'd have heard of connect.me ...
