I have driven in the U.K and Ireland on several occasions. I did not have an International Driving Permit but there was no problem using just my state-issued driver's license.

Not sure how pertinent it is. I've lived/worked in Japan some 23 years (military/civil service)
My daughter has lived there over ten years and of course drives a vehicle there.
She has used international license and finds it very usefull. My experience has been with
a military license, however on some personal trip made recently I find the international ticket
very handy. I would most definetly want this service continued.
