What's Harper's best quote on health care?

Harper has to muzzel his candidates from appearing in all candidate meetings to keep us from knowing what they really think. I think we should have recall legislation like BC except starting 60 days after any election. This would put more power in the hands of the MP and the voter and less power in the hands of the PM and the backroom ( i.e . 200 Canadian gold mining companies in Mexico using Canadian Embassy to pressure against Karios human rights initiative.)

What a wonderful way to turn around accusations that Liberal ads are unfair! Given how many lies the Conservatives have been spreading in their own attack ads, these accusations are pretty rich. And how funny is it that we have so many replacement Harper quotes to choose from. :)

All of these quotes are too long, save the last one. If you want a good Harper healthcare quote use this:

“What we clearly need is experimentation with market reforms and private delivery options [in health care].”

(Stephen Harper, then President of the NCC, 2001)

What's wrong with Northern European nations, Mr. Harper? They provide some of the best health care and education for their populations I've ever seen and have a highly rated quality of life and standard of living. Give me Northern Europe over America any day! Here's to a union of northern nations: Canada, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Finland :D

Keep the greed factor out of health care. As soon as you have for profit you have inequality of treatment. It is time to look at appropriate delivery systems, appropriate to our different demographic situations. Don't make our Prime Minister's negativity into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

All of these quotes are horrible. But they do illustrate quite nicely that Harper does not care about health care just like he does not care about the needs of Canadians.

I think the Liberal Party should correct this ad; however, the Conservatives have taken a page out of the Bush book and become extremely adept at negative advertising. As the polls consistently show, many Canadians have been persuaded by these ads, their false claims and quotes taken out of context . I've never understood why the Liberal Party has not taken these ads head on and corrected the impression they have given. Why doesn't the Liberal Party list the number and frequency of lies and quotes taken out of context from Conservative ads?

This should be your ad. Harper was upset with our quote, so we would like Canada to choose a better one. then list them and ask Canadians to come to the website and vote for their favorite.

Voting for a quote from 14 years ago seems to dilute the point that is supposed to be made...
Political views can change within a few years, Arianna Huffington was a Republican in the mid 1990's and by the late 1990's she switched to more liberal beliefs and has stuck with them ever since.
Two-tier healthcare doesn't really mean abolishing the current health care system. I want to vote liberal so bad but there needs to be better arguments that can appeal to those who think progressively.
What else are the liberals going to do that the conservatives will not do for the country?
The conservatives chose to use attack adds to put fear into people into NOT voting for the other party (which leads many to not vote at all), why did the Liberals have to follow the same route?
We used to laugh at the conservatives for using sleezy American political tactics, like those adds, but now its the national standard?
More politics, less games. Conservatives appeal to Canadians because they come at everything from a "logical" perspective, Liberals need to use a similar approach.
ei. of all the jobs that have been lost since 2008, how many were from foreign companies operating in Canada? Lowering the corp tax rate is supposed to increase foreign investment and create jobs, why would people want to rely on the shaky economies (USA, China, Europe etc) for their jobs?

Overhall Canada Health... Provinces to experiment, market reform, Private health care delivery have a frighten sound to it.

  • Laurie Clark - 13 years ago

This is by far the best quote to show Canadian people exactly how much contempt Harper has for them - play it loud and play it often!!!!

  • Susan Gillis - 13 years ago

Many Northern European social democracies offer models of thriving economies and strong social support, within a reasonable corporate tax structure of approx 18%. These are associations that can be of use to the Libs. I'd back away from that critique linking Harper to Northern European states as being too easy to misread by a public just skimming. (If Canada shares some of the positive attributes of some of those states we want to be able to use that.)

My sense is that everyone 'knows' (feels) health care needs reform. The quote needs to point to an unacceptable style of reform. I think #s 3 and 4 are potentials: The "overhaul" quote suggests a bigger project than many Canadians will be ready to endorse; also "each province should raise its own" might appeal to rank-and-file tories but should be jarring to fence sitters who would see it as Ottawa abandoning its humanitarian role which is why we (provinces) are a federal entity at all.

Although I commend the intiative, I don't think any of these quotes are punchy enough to get the point across strongly enough that Harper wants to dismantle the Canada Health Act and erode universal health care. Surely you can come up with something that will work better for your purposes. Thank you for emphasizing this issue of paramount importance!

In 2014, which is just three years away, the federal government will negotiate the Healthcare for each province in Canada; and do you want Harper closing that deal?

Great way to update the ad! And despite the righteous indignation from Mr. Harper and his attack dogs, please take note that they haven't disagreed with the content of the quote, only with who actually said it -- Mr. Harper's former boss and mentor.

  • Mark Francis - 13 years ago

The 'Northern welfare state" quote is an oldie, but a goodie from Harper, but doesn't specifically name health care.

    This one is best:

“Our health care will continue to deteriorate unless Ottawa overhauls the Canada Health Act to allow the provinces to experiment with market reforms and private health care delivery options.”

as it discusses 'overhauling' the Act, which Harper seems to deny, and presents privitization as a goal.

  • Mitch Mitchells - 13 years ago

The last quote is from a 1997 speech and Mr. Harper claims the line was a joke. While I don't believe him I think it would not be in your best interest to use it since it will be easily dismissed, as it has been previously.
