One thing is for certain...the Lions current staff is sure a heck of a lot more competent than the previous regime! I think it will not be long before this team becomes annual contenders.

Taking Fairley was a luxury and an unnecessary character risk choice. Hopefully Van Den Bosch , Williams and Suh can keep him in line. The right pick was Amukamara. Take Leshoure in round 2 and a linebacker (Foster/McCarthy) in round 3. A fast receiver could have been picked in round 4 (Gates). The Lions aren't the Patriots. They still need to build the ENTIRE roster with talent. Now they have to overspend for both linebackers and corners in free agency or get torched again!

Great, Great, Draft. Every one bemoaned (including me) the Pettigrew pick as not being the most pressing need, but he'll be in the pro bowl within the next two seasons.

Fairly is a Beast. If you watched Auburn play at all you'd agree. The two obvious future pro bowlers coming out of this draft on defense were Patrick Peterson and Nick Fairly. That's it.

    Keep it up Mayhew.

should have drafted Bowers in the second round

  • themurf - 13 years ago

There's a good reason Mayhew drafted another DT. Every team tried to double team Suh last year, sometimes it worked. With Fairly next to Suh, doubling up on Suh won't happen this year. One of them will running wild in the backfield, which will in turn make the linebackers and the CB's better. "B" for draft grade

Needed just one CB. ONE !!!!!!!!! If they had picked a CB with the 2nd pick instead of the WR I would have graded this draft an A. Little disappointed, but happy about Fairley.

they already have 1 OLB and a good cover corner lined up in free agency, that was going on before the lockout, so why is everyone piss`n and whinin about none in the draft, apparently i`m the only one that read that when mayhew and shwartz both already said that the guys wanted to come to Detroit, draft was a double AA+ because of that fact, the only thing that they could have done different in the draft that i think they could have done is pick up a decent DE instaed of the OLB that they got, we already have good back up OLB on the roster but still, great great draft, who`s gonna run on that???!!! lol

apparently nobody follows the lions even though they say they are lions fans

I guess no one is listening to Mayhew when he says the draft is not the end road. I don't believe in giving the draft an instant grade however I give this draft an A so far only because we still, hopefully have free agency, trades, etc. A lot can happen in the coming months.

A draft in thrall to an ideology -- best available regardless of need. By this logic, if the top-rated pick next year is another DT, should we draft one? I like a more balanced approach, get talent AND fill needs -- it can be done.
Prince Amukamara was rated higher by both ESPN and PFW, among others. Castonzo and Fairly had similar grades.
The Lions are still going to have to start 2 OLB's and CB's next year. That means they over-pay in free-agency IF they can find guys who aren't simply another team's cast-offs -- or start a bunch of free-agents. Good luck.

I would have taken Prince A. in rd 1, Benjamin Ijalana OT in rd 2, Mason Foster OLB or ILB in rd 3. Ijalana was a possible rd 1 pick and can play both OG or OT, Foster had rd 2 grades.
Needs and talent. Clint Boling OG/OT didn't go until rd 4. Numerous good WRs and RBs were still available in rd 4 -- which the Lions traded away for Leshoure.
Jahvid Best couldn't run inside last year because the OL couldn't move anybody. Leshoure will have the same problem. Stafford better hope there's no significant injuries on OL next year.

I give the Lions a D- in the draft. Ideologies, when pushed too far, can lead to disasters. I hope not, but...

It was a good draft they got the best players they could I don't see a CB or LB that were their when the lions was on the clock.

They could have taken a cb

    That was funny Jimi.

I gave the Lions a B because pending the new CBA, I feel they can fill team holes in free agency. I am also of the impression that a stellar D line can make average linebackers look good and serviceable corners look average. Further, two play makers (plus one to be determined) @ WR, two solid TEs, two talented RBs (plus one to be determined) and a guy with a rocket arm (when its still attached) can make serviceable O linemen look average. I know they are not on par with the Patriots but pending free agency moves, the Lions have put themselves in a better position each of the last two years. Go Lions...

lions whole origanizatation top to bottom is medieocore at best another draft filled with non starters and project players. we are the only team in the nfl without cheerleaders take the curse away of that and watch it turn around. die hard lion fans shpold at best get to look at the babes all these years and the fords denied us are only reason to go to the games remember barry is long gone baby jimi marine city
