Do you feel that schools are safer under the in-house police department?

I agree with the above comment. If you could place a T.V. camera in / outside some of these schools and show the public what goes on you just might be shocked. I have been a city poilce officer for 20 years and have seen quite a lot. I was shocked at DISD to see and experience the level of crime and at times hostile/violent behavior. I have worked incidents involving that were teachers and staff that have been assaulted / beaten up in the hall and class. Yes, things like that do happen inside these schools. Yes it says something society/people and the places of higher education that must now have police in them. Just about everything I have handled as a city police officer I have had to handle inside or outside these schools. Dismissals with large crowds of students /parent- adults fighting at times weapons involved. If these calls were dispatched everyday through DPD there would be several units responding. These are not single unit reponse type of callas. Most of DPD would be tied up responding to calls at these schools. Sometimes there are weapons involved ..we never really know until it happens. Most of the officers in these "schools" handle a tremendous amount of these offenses and incidents that erupt throughout the day...and mostly on their own. They are police just like DPD the only difference DISD is a specialized dept. that deals with schools. The "school" is that police officer's "beat" for 8 hours. Our patrol division responds to schools like elementary schools (which also have a host of problems) and to schools not covered by an officer that day due to illness etc.. Also patrol comes to the aid when an officer calls for help on the radio. As with all police officers in the city of Dallas we will always try to help and assist each other and pull together regardless of what the arm patch has on it i.e...DPD, DART, DISD, Constable, Sheriff, ....we are police officers first. That is a bond that will always be there. I am sure the call load both for the city of Dallas and Dallas ISD is tremendous. ( I hear the police radio for DISD most days and talk with DPD officers about the above.) We are all understaffed and it is a safety concern. Whatever people decide is up to them. I can only say that we do the very best that we can.

DISD police care about the students and staff In DISD and without them we have no safe schools. Leave the Dallas ISD police alone and let them do their job and that is protect us!
We don’t need any cuts in Dallas ISD Police Department.

While some might think Dallas ISD Police is not effective tell me why school administrators call DISD Police when you have rowdy students and/or parents on their campus feeling intimidated by parents who come to school(s) with disruption in mind. I have heard parents and school officials say that they feel safer knowing they have a police odficer on their campus who are certified by the State of Texas to have the same enforcement powers and in some cases because of their jurisdiction have more power than other first responders. When staudents are out of ontrol the first place called is DISD police. For whatever reason District and school administrators call DISD Police when students are out of control. The police department is already short on personnel , but, regardless of what people think these officers feel obligated when called to assist with a problem on the campus and even in the community. It sound like the same people who voted negative about having a DISD Police Department are the same ones who called for police assistance when they worked for the district. When the Trustee's voted to have our own police department they where hesitant not knowing the caliber of officers who would be employed. Take a look at the crowd base at athletic and/or other events on DISD property. There have been an increas in spectator participation at events all because people feel safer than in years pass. We are seeing other chool districts playing sports at our stadium all because they feel safer. We challenge you to come to sporting events and see how much safer you feel to see DISD police inside the stadium as well as patrolling the parking lot to ensure your vehicles are safe why you enjoy the event. I assure you that employees of the district and especially teachers feel safer on campus knowing a police officer is just a call away. Take the officer off the campus and see how many subsitute teachers will be called to fill in all because the primary teacher is afraid to come to work.
