What Makes a Good Enterprise?

To me, The Enterprise embodies all of Star Trek in one ship, crew, and environment. which is why it is SUCH a touchy thing to mess with. I think that The Captain's of each, have had their personality show through in the Ship Design more than some even notice.

Example: Kirk, little old & past his prime, but still has the innate capability to do whatever it takes to complete the mission, and that flows through in the Refit Constitution. As it was old at the time of it's use (hence refit) but was still able to be VERY capable at the hands of a Captain that was an expert with it.

For aesthetics, the ship MUST be symmetrical, and have a flow to it's hull design, meaning each component looks like it inspired the next. Also since the TNG Era the most prominent hull design features would be the: Saucer, Phaser arrays, Warp nacelles. if those 3 things are done well, and as I just stated, the components all work together well it's a hit. if not. well back to the drawing board, or it's a throw-away ship for a battle scene, or fodder for an episode / movie.

The enterprise captain and crew are essential, but that is really separate from ship design.

The ship must be symmetrical, rounded saucer and prominnent nacelles. If it doesnt look reminiscent to some extent of the original design, it will not feel like star trek

The Enterprise is the flagship of the Federation. It should be commanded by the best captain in Starfleet. It should have the premier crew in Starfleet. And, it should have the most advanced ship. I do not believe that you can just select one aspect. It is the Captain, Crew, and Ship to be a successful Enterprise. If you want to speak just about the ship itself, it should be the premier Cruiser of the Federation. Should the Federation begin moving in a new direction stylistically, for whatever reason, the Enterprise should be on the cutting edge of that trend.

    That's my humble opinion.
