Have you left journalists for dead?

Mandy - very true about the personal versus the financial/professional value of degrees.

Renee - I'm surprised that three in ten were still in the print game. It's been a long time since I published something that ran only in print (though a long time is relative, I've only been doing this five years or so). I used to write for a newspaper that folded. But I'm finding good opportunities to write for news websites.

There's no doubt that journalism, that is getting paid to be a journalist, has taken a real hit because of the web and subsequent demise of so many newspapers and magazines. I recently went to a gathering of career print journalists. Seven of ten were in different fields now.

Maybe it means that you don't need a degree in journalism to have a successful journalism career?

Some would say my degrees are "useless" (music, creative writing) but I loved what I was doing and learning and so even if my job was completely unrelated to these fields (which it isn't) I'd still be happy I devoted time to studying things I love. "Doesn't lead directly to a job" doesn't equal useless.
