Is the federal government right to be trying to shut down Vancouver's safe injection site?

Although I voted for the Conservatives and I am happy they have a majority, I hope they will support Insite. It is a 'Harm Reduction Program",that provides clean needles and a drop-off for used needles, this stops the sharing of needles and considerably cuts down the spread of HIV and Aids . Insite does NOT provide drugs. People should get their facts straight before they criticize something that works well and provides a much needed service. What it saves in medical costs arising from dirty needles is worth it.

honestly i think you'd have to be an idiot to want to shut down Insite. there's not one piece of bad research out there. all the research indicates this clinic saves lives and stops the spread of infectious diseases. in my opinion, when we begin treating people with addiction with compassion and without judgment, it has a major effect on their ability and willingness to recover (like any of us when we know someone else believes we can do it, when we ourselves don't believe in ourself). addiction is a human condition and we are all vulnerable to it. when people recover, we all benefit - less money spent on the social security net, improved economy etc. let's show our fellow human beings some compassion. if compassion's not your thing, then follow the science (research). that's my two cents.

When smoking was banned in public, smoking sections sprang up in restaurants and special areas at work . Now it isn't tolerated anywhere. Pity that drug users can't follow the same way to lose their habit without having to resort to injection sites paid for by non-user tax payers.

Though I voted Conservative, this is one area that I hope they get the point and change. Providing a safe injection site is HARM REDUCTION: for those who use it, and the surrounding community. Studies have proven their benefit, here, and abroad.

Some of those "junkies" actually want to get off their 'stuff.' These places also provide counselling and a safer place for the users.

IT MUST STAY OPEN FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR COMMUNITY!

    Let them suffer.

@ springishere Hmm.....If the users are in the downtown east side of Vancouver I'm not convinced the residents of West Vancouver or Kitsilano will welcome them to the neighborhood.

I think it's important to distinguish between the treatment being provided and the way the logistics are designed. I don't know enough about the treatment to comment, but I do believe the logistics of the program create problems. By being located where the users are, it encourages keeping them together, providing comvenient marketing and sales for pushers and others that benefit from the vulnerable population the program is meant to help.

I'd like to know where these criminals get the money to buy their drugs. Then maybe we could help the REAL victims!

I don't think anybody gets up in the morning and says "I'll become a junkie today.".
It is a severe mental health situation that is very difficult to handle.
These citizens need help. Insite saves lives and money. Nobody is saying, "Oh look there is Insite, I think ill be a drug addict.".
