Would you have filled your tank from the defective pump?

Let me ask another question; If you really liked a pair of shoes and the advertised price was $50.00 but when you went to the counter they rang up as $9.99, would you speak up? Sorry Payless, I'd smile all the way out the door.

Stealing is stealing, how could all of those people do that? This story makes me sad, 'nuff said.

It's not even tempting. It's stealing. It's no different than a waitress giving you the wrong change or the grocery store forgetting to ring up the soda under your cart. IT'S THEFT.

I guarantee you that the sign said the right price so they all knew it wasn't SUPPOSED to be that price.

I will give some credit for some of the customers, though, that it's very possible they just got out, pumped the gas, got back in the car and never looked. I do exactly that. It's not like you can shop around for the best price and get a bargain. I don't take a receipt from the machine so I don't know how much I was charged usually, which is stupid on my part. I could have easily done the same thing unintentionally.

Stealing is wrong. By knowingly pumping gas from a defective pump you are ripping off the gas station owner, not Exxon/Mobile or BP, etc... The independent owner still has to pay the wholesale price to the oil company to have his underground tanks filled, and every gallon pumped into a vehicle at an artificially low price is money out of his pocket and food off the table for his family.

Honestly, and I know some people won't believe this, I would not have even been tempted. My mother always said, "God is not going to bless that..." meaning, if you get something by dishonest means, it won't be as good as you think it's going to be...and perhaps much worse than if you hadn't gotten it! My experience is that it has turned out to be true more often than not. I wonder how many of those people had their kids with them, and celebrated getting away with "a bargain" (aka, a theft). I'm with Anne, I couldn't live with it. What we don't realize is that SOMEBODY has to pay for our "freebies." They're not really free. I feel for that gentleman business owner.

For true, I would have been tempted mightily! However, in the past when this has happened under different circumstances (groceries) (a vanity set), I left the store with my savings, got as far as my car, and could not take the guilt. I went back into the store and reported the error. So, I have learned that I cannot live with guilt. Such a HORRIBLE feeling.
