Ever eat squirrel?

I grew up in the low country of South Carolina and my father and I killed squirrels and small birds. We ate them many times and in many different ways. My son, a 28 year old engineer, still eats them to this day. Sometimes the people in the city need to go to the country and see what life is really about.

As a near "city dweller" who has been tortured by squirrels on my apartment balcony for nearly 8 years, this video was classic. Although I would love to see squirrels hunted, I don't think I am up for dining on them.

A must in cajun cuisine and east Texas. Great article in Texas Monthly on squirrel hunt camps recently.
My Granpa and I shot and dressed 'em. Bertha Mae fried'em mostly.
He had pecan orchards and pecan fed squirrel is the best.
Need a good dog or two to work'em around the tree for a good shot.
We had "Queenie" who was later drowned by a raccoon much to our dismay and disgust.
    Just a .22.
A good morning's work will bring 10-12 for cooking.

I grew up hunting, and squirrel is very good, ditto with the biscuits and gravy. My Grandmother knew how to cook wild game, it's a little different from cooking grocery store meat. It tastes nothing like chicken-although wild rabbit does.

45,336 people would NOT survive an economic collapse, they'd be busy diggin through the garbage for year old french fries instead of trying to cook a squirrel!

I moved from Md-DC area to the deep Ozarks of Missouri in the late 1970's with my husband and 3 children upon his Naval retirement. We raised pork, beef, rabbit, hunted wild game, fished and raised our vegetables and fruit. What a transition! My kids and husband always hunted squirrels for their enjoyment after cutting wood. I enjoyed cooking them. The family loved them fried and then slowly tenderized in a crockpot. I made gravy from the drippings and had to have mashed potatoes, home canned green beans and other wonderful vegetable dishes like a yellow squash casserole and simmered cabbage. We ate well with everyone working together. The kids grew up knowing hard work ( and lots of laughter and love) and were ready to go out into the world to get their further education. Right now I hope they remember wonderful fish meals and smoked trout appetizer, Orange Pheasant, Fresh Hams,
tongue sandwiches on rye, meatloaf made with beef, pork and venison, huge roasting pans of
turkey pot pie with an herbed crust and everyone around the family table who made their contribution!

Squirrels are the cleanest vegans in the forest and are vastly different from rabbits, which are really filthy by comparison. They are also quite alert and challenging to hunt in the wild, especially when the leaves are dry and it's difficult to walk silently. Give them the credit they deserve--fabulous game animals and great food.

Squirrel with biscuits and gravy is a breakfast you just can't top. It is the best. So is rabbit, no matter wether it is fried, stuffed and baked or put into that great Kentucky Burgoo recipe. Don't knock it until you've tried it. It took a long but I finally found a supplier for rabbit that I could put on my dinner table. I may live and work in the city but I'm a country gal at heart.
