We go one stage further; we don't _assign_ any tasks for assessment at all. The students decide what they want to _submit_ which will provide evidence they have met the module (course) outcomes. They propose that formally via a learning contract which the tutor signs off. Then, if they deliver what they have promised, they get credit for the module. (There are no grades.)
This is also a teacher-ed programme; there's a (slightly dated) introduction to the procedure at http://www.bedspce.org.uk/PCE_2006/introduction_to_assessment.htm
