An appalling statistic to be sure.
What possible reason could people have for being against such a positive and enriching program that is clearly of benefit to those Chinese students on an educational, cultural, and
most importantly in my book, a humanitarian level.
Not only that. To me it's also a very important gesture on the part of the Chinese leadership
that indicates a lessening of their fear of American ideology subverting their people in such
a way as to destroy their society. That is why they maintained such an isolationist stance for
such a long time. Remember the "Opium Wars"?
Now they extend to us an indication of trust and fellowship by allowing educators from Maine to mentor, shepherd, guide and also protect their most precious resource, their
children.
That to me is a sign of respect for the kind of metal that they think the people of Maine
are made of and I'm here to tell ya I'm a Mainer who's made of that metal.
Anybody who doesn't feel in their heart that what's going on in Millinocket is a good thing
either doesn't have a heart or doesn't know what it really means to be a "Mainer".
I'm astonished and appalled that so many people are blind to the wonderful effort being
put forth by all the people involved in bringing Chinese students to Millinocket.
