Is William guilty of "failure to notify?"

Definitely needs some jail time for threatening a law-abiding citizen, and also be fired immediately. The CCW citizen needs to publish this officer's name in the newspaper and follow up to make sure he loses his job.

  • Mike - 10 years ago

This cop should be fired and brought up on charges for terroristic threats. Partner should also face disciplinary review

  • Kat - 10 years ago

This officer has anger issues and should be fired. He doesn't need to be working with the public in any capacity. He has major problems and needs treatment in a mental facility immediately.

  • Curtis - 10 years ago

This is a perfect example of why when I get pulled over I hand the officer my DL, CCW AND INSURANCE CARD and I'm a expolice officer. In reference to this officer he needs to lose his job.

  • Gregg Garcia - 10 years ago

This cop should not have a badge and needs to find a new line of work.

  • Rich - 10 years ago

The police officer should lose his job, be arrested and indicted for making terroristic threats, denial of civil rights (a federal charge), intimidating a witness, conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon and a few others.
We cannot condone steriod raging maniacs like this running around with a gun and a badge. I certainly do not want people like this acting under color of law, it is a disgrace and just goes to show the us versus them attitude of police today.
    Rich in New Mexico.

I hope he sues the hell out of that piece of garbage gestapo punk cop. Verbally threatening to kill him goes far beyond being out of line, it is inexcusable. What a prick. No doubt he's a democrat.

  • Karl - 10 years ago

I have had the same thing happen to me. The officer in my incident was obviously a rookie on his own for a very short time. Starts yelling at me and didn't give me a chance to say anything. He even had an Explorer Scout with him. Once he finally calmed down enough to speak to me, he realized that I posed no threat and didn't do anything wrong to begin with. I drive a Corvette. I think he just wanted to see the car but got carried away because of the Explorer Scout with him. Some people shouldn't be given the authority that we give these police officers, they obviously can't deal with all different circumstances that are likely to come up against. Being polite is sometimes called for. Too many officers think yelling is the only way to speak to a suspect.

  • Bruce Burden - 10 years ago

That is the reason why I do not have a permit ; it is not the criminals you have to worry about but the thugs
    the government hires!

  • Phillip Barton - 10 years ago

The "officer" needs to be sent back to his training academy -- if Cleveland has one -- for extensive training in public discourse and civil/human relations, IF NOT FIRED for improper conduct under color of authority. The diver needs an attorney to sue under federal laws pertaining to his civil rights being violated by civil authority.

  • Stephen D.Dest - 10 years ago

this cop needs to go have a beer with Obama. they should make the law easy, just start yelling, second amendment rights! the problem with most law enforcement officer theses days is they just can't wait to shot someone for any reason.this suspect did everything he could to stay calm and excite this troubled officer more then he already was. i'm sure this officer has had many difficult situations to deal with daily, however it is his job , to know the difference and conduct himself accordingly. i pray for his mental health and applaud the victims restrain. the judge and jury should see to it that this officer receives help and the victim should be protected from ever having to deal with that same officer ever. the officers threat of pulling him over and arresting him every time he sees him is not something that should be taken lightly.many officers in many communities do this same thing every day and night and it just isn't right!

  • Mark - 10 years ago

I don't mind if cops get gruff and tough, they deal with a lot of crummy people, but this guy is so unprofessional it's ridiculous. The threat to kill the man without any feeling of remorse, the threat to attack the woman, combined with his profane language, if you or I did it, would be considered assault (all you have to do is create the fear of being harmed; you don't have to actually follow through). It might also be menacing, probably aggravated since the cop is armed. This is criminal behavior by the cop and also opens him and the city of Canton to civil liability. I'd be shocked if they haven't fired this a-hole yet. If they haven't, pressure needs to be brought on Canton to dismiss this cop and criminally charge him.

  • keri - 10 years ago

I think this Cop needs to be FIRED ON THE SPOT!!!!! He is a power head Not a Cop.. He makes the rest of the cops look like Idiots... Fire him, and Hire Better Judges that will Fire these Kinds of Cops!!!

  • Todd Burnworth - 10 years ago

The officer was a rude asshole. William attempted to announce he had a weapons permit for a concealed weapon. The officer cut him off numerous times and would not let him speak. Therefore the officer should be reprimanded, re-trained, and/or fired. He was a fucking idiot. I am so sick and tired of bad cops.

  • Harold - 10 years ago

This stupid cop needs to be taken out, unfit for the uniform, unfit to breathe my air. He needs one in the head, two in the chest. thats why WE MUST ALL arm ourself. idiots like this deserve a bullet.

  • Pat Harding - 10 years ago

I hope that this officer was removed from his position and HIS carry permit revoked. I am a retired police officer with 20 years on the street and I am appalled at how this guy overreacted. He gives police officers everywhere a bad name.
Anyone who threatens to execute (his own words) a citizen should be fired and charged. If this guy is still on the job, his department has incurred a huge liability. The driver handled himself very professionally and with much more composure than did the officer.

  • Bill Godfrey - 10 years ago

Sorry to say, this is typical of SOME police who get power happy with the uniform, gun (glock) and authority. The filthy mouth on this officer should not be condoned from ANY public servant. This officer wants to "execute" someone and is obviously looking for an excuse. Usually it takes more than two hot heads to make a gang but in this instance, only two is needed. Big mouth is putting on a show for his partner. He should be removed from duty and not allowed to have a carry permit.

  • Frank Doty - 10 years ago

If a weapon is truly concealed. Why is there a need to tell the officer. This person weapon was not very well concealed if it was on his waist so the officer could grab it. If any officer acted that way with me. He would not have to worry about the next day. There was no need for the officer to act that way. Just be nice let the person Speak. Then if he does not follow the law. Arrest him. Fact is I do not need a firearm if your within 4 feet of me to get rid of any threat. Including threatening my life officers.

  • Rick Horowitz - 10 years ago

Furthermore, the world would be a better place if that officer were shot by someone who tried to tell him that he was carrying, before finally giving up and just proving it.

  • Rick Horowitz - 10 years ago

Furthermore, the world would be a better place if that officer were shot by someone who tried to tell him that he was carrying, before finally giving up and just proving it.

  • Dennis Williams - 11 years ago

This officer is atypical of the bullying cop who never made it in life but needs to take control of everything and everyone around him. His language is certainly disrespectful and I only wonder what his language is like with his wife and children. This guy is an insult to the people of Canton, OH and to its citizens. HE SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY. Unbelievable

  • Jeffrey M Roberts - 11 years ago

You should drive a truck for a living if you want to see this kind of abuse, the thing is your not in a bad neighborhood, your just doing your job. These officers didn't even follow there own protocal for securing a vehicle, they should be fired and in prison for there conduct. The mouthy one never treated anyone with any respect from the time of the first encounter. Sorry to say most of the police officers are this way and very few are proffesional.

  • Joe - 12 years ago

Yes....The cop is an idiot.....Yes....William had some questionable people in his car....No...William was not breaking any law.....If I was the judge the cop would be fired and then brought up on charges for threats to kill a member of the public. William, don't stay out till 3am anymore....that's stupid too!

  • Pete M - 12 years ago

Ladies and gentlemen are you kidding me? any supervisor viewing this footage because of the "felony arrest" should have placed this "officer?" under administrative leave pending a psychiatric evaluation immediately-the way this ass spoke to the individual, he was to much at ease with his profanity, he has done it many many times, his abuse came very easy-listen to him folks, how he gets excited, his excitement increases the more he yells and cusses, he is without a doubt a serial abuser, and if the other officer is actually his "ride along" partner, and is in the same car-he also should be removed from duty for letting that behavior continue. These two have let the badge and gun go to their heads. These two give other professionals a bad name, and shooting someone is just around the corner for these two, God help the individual who is riding in a car, and witnesses Daniel Harless pull the trigger on someone trying to tell him he has a CCW, he would be as good as dead, and his partner would simply cover it up-these two cannot be trusted with the public period, there is nothing to do but dismiss them immediately, and remove their gun carrying ability. And on a more current note the cop Daniel Harless is being investigated by IAD for at least 17 complaints since 2001. God help the people of Canton Ohio.

  • Robert Taylor - 12 years ago

These two cops should be fired for their actions and their mouths where did you find these hot heads their both just liability's waiting to happen. Save the department and the city a law suit and just fire these two Hot Heads!! Thay belong working at taco Bell !!

  • gary - 13 years ago

This guy was of he wall, a can t call him a officer , I have to many freinds that are officers. Never have I seen or heard of a person with such disrepect for hes for his perfasion. He needs consuoling and a new job. He has no repest for the ob or the people. He really has some mental problems. He gives officers a bad name. Did his wife cheat on him before he left for work? You need to look for help:" And a new line of work .you are a lawsuit waiting to happen.

  • Rick - 13 years ago

I thought cops were there to serve and protect? This cop obviously has too much power and cannot control himself. Fire his ass!

  • EX DEPUTY SHERIFF - 13 years ago

THIS OFFICER NEEDS TO BE DISMISSED FROM THE P.D. I UNDERSTAND THE SITUATIONS ONE CAN GET INTO AS A POLICE OFFICER BUT THIS IS ALL UNCALLED FOR. HERE IN VA. TO CARRY YOU ARE CHECKED OUT BY THE COMMONWEALTH ATTORNEY, FBI, NCIC CHECKS ARE DONE BEFORE A JUDGE ISSUES THE PERMIT. IT'S GETTING TO THE POINT THAT A LOT OF CONCEAL WEAPON HOLDERS ARE AFRAID TO CARRY BECAUSE OF THE HARASSMENT THEY MIGHT HAVE TO GO THROUGH WITH THE POLICE. IF THIS POLICE OFFICER IS THIS NERVED UP HE NEEDS TO GET A DIFFERENT KIND OF JOB. REMEMBER THE PERSON WITH THE PERMIT IS THE GOOD GUY TREAT US AS ONE. THERE ARE BAD APPLES IN EVERYTHING, POLICE INCLUDED. THAT IS JUST THE NATURE OF MAN.

  • john doe - 13 years ago

he must of watched the movie judge dread with sly in it. a little to much. the officer must be nuts. not only should he be fired but the person who hired him should be held responsible.

  • john doe - 13 years ago

im will never go to canton after this incident. is the oficer under adoffe hittlers command. never know what the officer will do next time he is mad he might kill people he pulls over . he must be fired and charged with fellony.

  • Wm - 13 years ago

Sorry folk's I don't care what sort of ass you think this officer is but if placed in the same situation I would be yelling the whole time Officer I have a concealed weapon permit and I am carrying a weapon as loud as I could until I was acknowledged by one of the officers. Way to many death's of officers in the line of duty these day's To have a permit there are certain responsibilities' that go with it.

  • Keith - 13 years ago

I can not believe the video I just watched. As a Conceal Carry Holder in Texas myself, for this Officer to first threaten to "put lumps" on the female before telling her to get lost is the first threat. The search of the car without any consent as to what was being searched for was never given. Then the Officer goes to the driver the guy had the car door partly open as to try to get out but was told to stay put. The Officer then starts to question the guy why he was there not allowing him to notify. The scariest part is first when he asks him if he wants him to put the gun to his head then says I should just step back and unload 10 shots and "execute" you while his partner lies to cover it up. This Officer needs to go to jail for all kinds of charges including making a death threat, OFFICIAL OPPRESSION not to mention the treat of every time he sees the guy he is stopping the car, arresting the guy without cause and having the car towed ie more Police misconduct. I am in shock. This guy needs to be have his peace officer's license stripped and sent to jail. His partner needs less punishment but concurs with the first officer and O should be suspended for a term. I will never go to Canton in spite of wanting to go to the NFL Hall of Fame.

  • Kevin - 13 years ago

Abs: "I want to know what a "legal carry" guy is doing in a high crime area with a woman outside the car who has prior arrests for soliciation? "

@Abs: I would like to know what crime was being committed? I mean, I understand if a crime was being done, but these police officers had nothing. They even let the woman go.

  • Tress - 13 years ago

This officer and the way he acted in this video is why officer's are treated in such a disrespected way, not all police officer's act this way and when one does and is caught on tape doing so, makes every one of them look bad.. But lets all remember when someone needs help, who is the first person you will call for help?? A police officer!! In hope that you don't get one like this rude ass. Anyone that incounters something like this in a traffic stop would be scared to death--I only wonder how many times he has done this and how many women he has intimidated with his power?? There is a time when a police officer should retire from the stress and we can all agree that this guy is done.

  • Mr leigh heath - 13 years ago

what the hell is Ohio doing allowing that utter imbecile to carry a badge and gun. I visit america regularly and have a great regard and respect for the law enforcement personnel... but this guy needs culling....and fast!

  • Tammie - 13 years ago

I think he should be fired!!! He has no right to treat people like that. You put a uniform on some people, they think they are superior. He is a monster and doesn't deserve his job. I really hope something is done, not a smack on the hand, or paid leave, I can't believe how nasty he was, It is not his place to judge people, we have a higher power to answer too!!!!!!!!

  • Paul - 13 years ago

I've been a Police Officer 21yrs, and that Canton Officer should be fired !!!! Another idiot cop out here that should have never been put on as a Policer in the first place. Cop's like that give us all a bad name. I wish these dept's would do a better job weeding these roid rage officers out before putting them on the street. Now if he had got shot, he would wonder why !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a dumb ass. I hate cops like that. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • William G. Webber - 13 years ago

When I lived in Toledo Ohio I saw officers get nasty with people but never heard any Officer say He would Kill someone. This Officer Crossed the line and should be put injail and fired. We do not need cops threatening law abiding People. How many people has He already killed and got away with it. This is a VERY serious violation of Law and order!!! We Citzens have to help all Our Police BUT We have to be able to trust them.

  • Dave - 13 years ago

This type of cop is useless to our society. Many like him are egotistical sadists. He should be made unemployed and null and void.

  • Lou - 13 years ago

The loud-mouthed cop sounds just like my nephew who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia/bi-polar disorder. My nephew is always telling me of encounters with those he considers low-lifes using the same expressions as the copy used on the driver.

That cop should be removed from duty, given a thorough medical examination and put through strenuous courses on anger management and how to treat the citizens he is supposed to be serving. Give some people a uniform, a gun and a little authority and they think they are "overlords" of the universe. The other cop wasn't a combative...that I could tell.

    Good luck to William.

  • greg in central va - 13 years ago

As a retired officer I am appalled by the behavior of the mouthy cop. Although the man's presence in a high crime area would raise an eyebrow, it is not in itself illegal. This videotape is priceless and I do mean PRICELESS. I am not an advocate of suing police depts but this is one instance I would wholeheartedly support such a law suit. CCW are not the enemies.

  • Duke-Jinx - 13 years ago

This is your typical cop that joined a police force to be the 'tuff guy' that he has never been. The type that were teased and bullied at the school bus stop as children. His rant and threats alone disqualify him as a public servant.
In Ohio, when the cop ran his 1029 on the plate.. the registered owners info comes back with a Big CCW if he has such a permit. Information relating to what the officer can expect to encounter from the pulled over subject... is the very reason for running the plate. ...and this cop ran the plate.
William, consider yourself lucky... here in Michigan, the dash cam tapes seem to come up missing a lot when the shoe is on the other foot.
One POS cop makes a hundred good cops look bad.
Thankfully, most cops don't have such a psychological disorder

  • Guy - 13 years ago

That cop should be JAILED for making terroristic threats ... and the vid used as evidence.

  • Barnes Haven - 13 years ago

On the way to the hospital, in Michigan. State Trooper pulls us over for failure to dim - in a timely manner. "License and registration, please." "I am obligated to tell you that I have a CCW, but am not carrying any weapons." "You are supposed to tell me immediately!" Can you say, "Duh" and define immediately?
Ever try to say anything before a cop asks for license and registration?

  • Gary Kitchen - 13 years ago

This officer should be on permenent desk duty at lease, better yet he should not be an officer at all. He has nor concern for people or respect.
    Not an honorable person

  • Al - 13 years ago

This saddens me. My husband is a cop in Ohio and has informed me that our state is no different in showing a CCW on screen when a driver's information is run through the system. This cop behaved horribly and is the reason cops have a bad rep. He needs to get off the roids or whatever he's on, get some time on the couch and get a new job. There's no excuse to behave in such a bullying manner in this case. There are plenty of other cops who behave appropriately and have been laid off all throughout the state who should replace this guy immediately. I know sometimes this behavior is necessary, but not here.

  • Wolf Sharp - 13 years ago

Citizens have the right to carry arms, plus, this guy had his concealed weapons permit. Is this cop above the constitution? That would make this police officer punishable for jail time, let alone a traitor to protecting American Citizens.

More evidence that law enforcement (enslavement) is actively seeking aggressive and disturbed individuals to become police officers in order to make citizens get used to understanding that Police Officers are to become like the Gestapo, who you should fear will either kill you or throw you in jail for the rest of your life if you don't do what they say.

  • Robert Holstein - 13 years ago

Tim hits it right on the head. What was the officer doing for 5 minutes before approaching the car? He was running the license plates. On the few times that I was pulled over for traffic violations, the officer always asks if we have anything illegal or weapons in the car.

This officer is a hot headed, redneck, meat head!

  • jredegg - 13 years ago

Cop was way out of line!! This guy has too short of a fuse and is dangerous out there dealing with the public.

  • Ron - 13 years ago

Mr. Williams While I am not a lawyer I am a certified firearms instructor and have been teaching concealed carry classes in the great state of Ohio for the past 4 years, it would appear to me that you have beeen violated severly, I am prayerful that you will proceed with a nice fat lawsuit against this officer and the city if you are legally able. This sad excuse for a law enforcment officer has shamed himself and his uniform and should not be allowed to terrorize any other law abiding citizens, please Mr. Willams I emplor you, do what is within your power and the law to see to it this officer recieves his just rewards and you yours. I will be following your story and keeping you in my prayers.

  • jason - 13 years ago

This is what happens when cops think they are above the law. These are the bad apples on the police force this guy probably never amounted to anything in his life and the only thing he was good at is being a thug terrorizing the good law abiding citizens of this country. This thug does not deserve to be a cop. This thug is the real loser and I hope he loses his job over this but he probably won't because the courts and the department he works for will side with him and he will keep his job. he definatly violated protocol and was unprofessional in every way. I would like to think that this is not the majority of those of us who serve and protect

  • Mark McMurtrie - 13 years ago

The cop with the mouth deserves to be pistol whipped himself for disrespecting the public he is SUPPOSED to SERVE.

These blue shirt thugs with an IQ of 95 are hardly the ones to go preaching to people about what is right and wrong.

This guy thinks he is a genious and his and ONLY his opinion is valid....typical of policy enforcement officers attitudes.

He has displayed an utter lack of professionalism and displayed that he is willing and would, without 'losing sleep' shoot someone....that is his onw statement.

He has also pre-empted a cmapaign of harassment against the man he verbally assaulted and defamed. A blue shirt and minimum IQ should not be prerequisites for tha type of job.

  • Abs - 13 years ago

I want to know what a "legal carry" guy is doing in a high crime area with a woman outside the car who has prior arrests for soliciation? Sounds like this guy is carrying a gun because he goes to high crime areas to speak with girls in areas known for one of the oldest crimes. Sorry, CCW's were not meant to protect you while you go to committ a crime. He had plenty of time to say that he was armed. Street sweeping ... really?

  • Doug - 13 years ago

For this cop to be a cop he should be a lot more professional. He is beraiting this citizen for not being responsible and he is not at all the type of person that needs to be a police officer. If he is not fired and the municipality that he works for is not sued for this action I will be upset. I respect officers and wish them well but this police officer has a serious issue and in my oppinion is a danger to himself and the people he is to serve.

  • Jeff - 13 years ago

This is absolutely maddening. I am here as I am an extreme member to GB.com and receive newsletter and emails etc.... As I break away from working on a law enforcement abuse of power case I have been forced into (state of Pennsylvania). Working on defending my liberties as a tax paying , law abiding citizen. My story though without a weapon is eerily similar to this mal-adjusted over the top, certainly dangerous to the public he is sworn to protect police officer. I fear (in the most common sensical meaning) for the public at large as individuals such as these are given an open season license on the citizens of this country. This is truly frightening stuff. I'm glad this was completely caught on video. This man should and likely will be judicated. However, once the charges are filed unless dismissed...regardless of the verdict (Not Guilty..does not translate into INNOCENT) will remain on his record. A crying shame because of a couple of narcissistic, Bad Ass, arrogant beyond measure so called protectors of the LAW. I find myself just shaking my head at what is happening to reality. William,...... God Speed!....

  • Steve Evenson - 13 years ago

Just wondering...what the basis for the stop to begin with??? LOL

  • Citizen - 13 years ago

When will those power tripping loser cops realize that people with concealed carry permits are the good guys, and will not cause any trouble.
That officer should be fired and have his house and life savings taken in civil court.
The department should be sued to the max!
Driver posed not threat, complied with all instruction and was very polite. For that he was severely mistreated.

  • Greg - 13 years ago

These two cops need to be fired for professional misconduct.

  • Ken - 13 years ago

And cops wonder why they get shot at traffic stops. I've been to Ohio, and have had the same treatment from the officers as with this one, and didn't have a weapon, had I had one, I might have considered it with the attitude that I was givin. This type of attitude is not called for by the officers on routine traffic stops. It's that type of behaviour usually why things turn to crap on a traffic stop. One officer who had me stopped for doing " ONE " yes .. 1 mile over the posted speed limit supposedly was so rude I told em to feel free to take me to jail!!! What he didn't know until I pulled it out was the two way walkie talkie that was keyed up, broadcasting on the company freq, and our dispatcher called the police to alert them they were hearing their officer being a "jerk". Two other officers showed up rather quickly and I was kindly asked to "be on my way" ... with an appology from the senior officer. Tis a shame this is the state of affairs of police stops these days.

  • 1Adam - 13 years ago

How about anger management for the one officer?

  • Tim - 13 years ago

This could have easily been avoided in the following way. I live in the great state of Arizona were no permit is required to conceal carry for residents of this state. In this state when a license plate was ran through dispatch and a CCW was required it would display as the owner having a CCW license along with the rest of the identity information of the vehicle owner. This avoids any surprise to the officer at the beginning of a stop. An intelligent officers first step is to ask the driver if he has a weapon in his possession, and then the stop continues from that point. The officer may then take possession of the firearm during the rest of the stop. I can't believe these two followed proper procedure at any time during this stop. The driver could have easily been an off duty officer from another town and this could have gotten real messy real fast. The lead officer demonstrated extreme paranoia of lawful citizens that carry concealed weapons, as though law enforcement should be the only individuals to enjoy the right to self defense. He has embarrassed himself and fellow officers with his demonstration of how not to enact a traffic stop within a state that allows concealed carry permitting. Neither of these two have the mental faculties to be law enforcement officers. The Second officer should never consider climbing into the back of a car that is occupied by anyone in the front seat before the vehicle is secured. He should have at least had enough sense for his own safety to asked the driver if he had a concealed carry permit before he entered the back seat of the car. The loudest officer is definitely a danger to himself, his partner, and civilians as a whole. He has disgraced himself and law enforcement. I think he probably watch too many cop show's growing up and bought into the script hook line and sinker. Most unfortunate.

  • kooper - 13 years ago

If you actually watch the video you will see that at no point in time do you see the officer tell the driver to not speak. I've gotta admit, I side with the cop on this one. I would be pissed too if I were him.

  • Brad - 13 years ago

This officer should be fired and jailed. He trampled on the citizens rights, acted unprofessional, cursing and abusing these people.
And they wonder why we call them pigs!
Throw the book at this pos. he belongs in jail and a felony conviction on his record
