You’re really biasing your own poll by wording it like that. People who are gay and Christian call themselves gay Christians, not “practicing homosexuals”. The only people using the term “practicing homosexual” are people looking for ways to dehumanize, demonize, and pathologize being gay, plus a small group of proud practicing homosexuals reclaiming the term. So just know that the (already small) percentage of “no” responses is really, really inflated by how you phrased the question.

There’s very little to claim for proof being gay is in conflict in any way with being Christian. What is in the Bible is scant and largely, in origin, referencing homosexual prostitution more than homosexuality itself. The sin being hateful and self righteously intolerant, however, is discussed many times at length in the Bible. Jesus in particular had a lot to say about people rejecting others based on their “sin” while sinning happily themselves.

you cannot continue to be gay and a Chritian...

  • Evil Man - 11 years ago

No way... because the ridiculous religion known as christianity specifically forbids and hates gays... so you CANNOT be both gay and a christian, unless you are willing to accept your HYPOCRISY and face your constant COGNITIVE DISSONANCE.

    BAN RELIGION.

  • toth - 13 years ago

What kind of idiotic question is this? A person's sexual preferences have nothing to do with their religious beliefs, so obviously one can be gay and Christian--and many people are. As to why they'd want to be Christian, I couldn't possibly guess.

Homosexuals should see the hatred spewed by these followers of a supposedly loving god and reject their bronze-age beliefs and ignorance.

In the Bible God makes His stance on homosexuality clear. Now, thats not to say that someone who is homosexual cannot ever come to Him, because no sin is too great for God to forgive. But to practice homosexuality unrepentantly is to contradict calling oneself a Christian, a follower and child of the Lord God Almighty. Temptations are not sin, but the practice is, and I believe that God looks at the sin of homosexuality the same as lying, stealing, murder, rape, and taking His Holy Name in vain, selfish thoughts, and all other forms sexual immorality: it's sinful, it's wrong, He wants it to stop, He wants His love and grace to be enough for you to turn from sin and choose Him instead. Look at it this way, how much would you be willing to give to The One who gave it all? Is it really all that much to ask, to deny yourself the ugly pleasures of the flesh?

WHY ARE SO MANY CONCERNED WITH THE JUDGEMENTS OF ALL OTHERS THAN GOD ?

WHEN ONLY GOD HAS THE POWER TO CAST THEM INTO HELL ?

GOD ALREADY HAS SPOKEN ON THIS MATTER.

WHO IS ANY MAN TO SAY DIFFERENT AND PREVAIL AGAINST GOD ???

    Luke 12:5
But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

    Pro 30:5
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

    Pro 30:6
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

    Rom 3:13
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

    Rom 3:18
There is no fear of God before their eyes.

    1Jn 2:4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

    Lev 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

    Luke 16:15
And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

    Mathew 24:15
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

the bible more than once plainly clearly states a homosexual will not enter heaven. if you were homosexual and stop and are saved you can but not if you still are. period. revelations says not to add to or take away from the bible, those who say you can be homosexual gay etc and Christian are lying, twisting truth to suit their need.

  • JILL - 13 years ago

What many do not understand is that when God created the heavens and the earth and
all the living things, he did it in such a way that it describes His perfect essence, Which
is Life and Abundance (multiply meaning much) The idea between God and His creation
means a perfect union. While it is true that because of the fall of man (rebellion, sin), God's most perfect creation brought forth diviances which are not a perfect union with Himself.
When God manifested himself in the flesh to remove the affects of sin, he reestaablishes
the union. Man must humble himself before God about his rebellion against His Creator.
When this done (repentence) God seals us with His Spirit and the Spirit with us works to
perfect us towards the completed union which He planned from the beginning in Eternity
Past. Paul tells us to work out our salvation. This doesn't mean we are saving ourselves,
but our work in submitting to God by deny and rejecting the sinful nature. At His coming
we will recieve our glorified bodies and spend eternity with God in "The Perfect Union"
God Tells us both in the Old Testament that Our Maker is our Husband, in the New Testament
He is described as our Bridegroom and we will join Him in the marriage supper of the Lamb.
So,No, we must deny our sinful nature , you cannot be a true follower of Christ and
continue in behavior that separates you from the union. Practicing homosexuals as well
as every other christian practicing sinful behavior are walking all over the precious gift
God has given us. The Lord says, if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better to
enter the Heavenly Kingdom with only one hand than to enter the burning fires of Hell with
both hands and so on. As hard as it seems, we are not to conform to this world and the desires
of the flesh which belong to this world but work towards being transformed as a citizen
    of the Heavenly Kingdom.

Homosexuality is a sin... But, so is lying, and being drunk, and getting angry... I believe that anyone who recognizes that they are struggling with a sin, and is remorseful in their struggle, falls under the grace of our perfect God (who loves them all the same)... The difference is when someone denies that they are a sinner... At that point, they are denying the idea that Jesus sacrificed Himself for that sin...

  • James - 13 years ago

I use to think that people are not born gay...but we're all born with the sin of the world (Adam and Eve)...That's why we have to be BORN AGAIN! Until we're born again, we can never claim to be a Christian! However, sin is sin...nobody can judge homosexuals unless they are without sin, which no human being is w/out sin! Only God can judge...but unitl we're BORN AGAIN, we have the sin of man and are open to worldly things. Born again Christians are human too, but they understand right and wrong!

  • Robby - 13 years ago

As a former practitioner of this lifestyle, I can safely say that the answer to this is emphatically 'NO'. If you are in unrepentant sin, no matter WHAT it is, then you are not a follower of Jesus. As has been said over and over here, sexual sin is against your body.

That said, there are also a lot of liars, adulterers, thieves, etc., that claim the name of Christ that are going to have a rude awakening come judgement day.

Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car.

    Peace!

  • Cyndi - 13 years ago

God LOVES all of us, but HATES the sin we all commit, so that obviously means he HATES the homosexual lifestyle, just has he HATES all other sins and to be a growing Christian we must ask for forgiveness of our sins and QUIT commiting the particular sin that is keeping us from a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. That means you CAN NOT be a practicing homosexual and live a life for Christ.

  • Good Grief People - 13 years ago

This is SO not complicated. What part of "Do not..." do gays not understand? Of course we all sin - but gays insist that their sin is good. It is not - it is an abomination to God. Pick up the book and read it, people. You read and accept all kinds of crap from mere men but refuse to read and believe God Himself. And yes, my sin also is an abomination to God. Sheesh. This is not rocket science. A first grader can understand it.

  • Jeff - 13 years ago

I don't know any Christians, and I am a conservative, fundamental one, who are not practicing sinners of some type. So what's the deal with this type question?

  • Aaron - 13 years ago

Rick - although I agree with the premise of your comment, are you suggesting that "practicing" Christians are sin free? Of course not. To set the standard you advocate then we must kick out all sinners. While we should never condone or accept the sin, as some churches have done, we must not stop loving the person, with sin and all. This is the same thing Christ dealt with by having dinner at the tax collectors house. How dare he! One can be saved and begin following Christ, yet still have sin issue to work out of their lives. How many people in our churches are saved, following Christ but are yet growing in their understanding of sin and their process of eliminating those sin patterns from their lives? Are they not a "practicing" Christian until they get done with the process? Is that your premise?

  • Aaron - 13 years ago

One does not become sin free and perfect, then become a christian. Christ calls us to follow Him and in that process we strive to be more Christlike. So yes, we are all sinners following Christ. In that same way, one can be an adulterer, homosexual, liar, even maybe a politician and be a Christ follower. Non of us so called Christ followers is without flaw. If you want to eliminate homosexuals, then are you also going to kick out those who commit other sin? Is a lack of sin the standard for Christianity? Of course not.

  • Josh - 13 years ago

This is ridiculous. Murderers can be forgiven, but gays can't? People pick and choose what they want to believe out of the Bible. Doesn't the Bible say no one is perfect, everyone is a sinner? And doesn't it say if you think it, you are just as guilty as if you actually did it? That means that all you married men out there that secretly watch porn while your wife is sleeping cannot be Christians because you are an adulterer. It would mean that you can only be Christian if you are without sin and are a perfect being. God doesn't need time to think about whether or not He will forgive you, you are already forgiven, remember God already knows what you will do cause He is all knowing. Picture God in heaven with the book of life and a pencil and He is erasing your name and then having to write it back in because one minute your saved and the next your not, ridiculous. People that have homosexuals are the same as people that hate people of other races, they need to try to justify themselves because deep down they know they are wrong. I see a comment that says "being Christian is being Christ like". If I'm understanding your comment you just said it yourself, being LIKE CHRIST, not being Christ! That means being as "Christ like" as YOU can be, not everyone is the same and there is no magic bar you have to rise above to be considered Christ like.

  • DK7 - 13 years ago

Let’s be clear what God thinks about homosexuality. Lev 18:22 Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable (or abomination). 24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.

Romans 1:26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.

What does Paul teach about continual or habitual sinning? 1 Cor 6:9 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified

Some of you “were”, no longer, not openly, continually and habitually sinning. Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and other denominations who allow detestable and abominable wickedness to persist and condone it, they are in a very bad danger zone. All sin is equal to God, but God makes it very clear that homosexuality is not natural, no one is born gay and that it is highly wicked and an abomination to Him. Only God knows the heart of man, but openly accepting such wicked lifestyle choices as not sin, is a grave sin itself.

  • dfrench - 13 years ago

Christ died to give us power over sin, not an excuse to sin. The bible says to whom you yield your members to is to whom you are a servant. God gave His only begotten Son for the sinner (the homosexual) but only to save the soul and destroy the sin (homosexuality).

  • Bobby - 13 years ago

The key word in the question is "practicing". The answer is no. Can you be a PRACTICING fornicator or adulterer and be Christian? No. No because a Christian is supposed to be a follower of Christ, his teachings and his life. If you are a "practicing" sinner or willfully rebellious to God's laws then the answer is no. If you struggle with your sins and try to repent and change your life, then yes, but if you're not even trying and you're making excuses for your sins, then you are not a Christian.

  • Rick - 13 years ago

It would be nice if any of these folks commenting would read all the Bible and not just parts....The key word here is "practicing" if you believe its not a sin you are committing then no you cant be a Christian...The Bible is clear " Without repentance there is NO forgiveness of sin"

  • Caligula - 13 years ago

You can be gay and be a Christian, the same way an alcoholic can be a Christian. The act is unholy but not evil.

That being said, god does not approve of homosexuality or alcoholism or drug use. But sinners can be Christian no matter the sin as long they understand that and try to right themselves from the sin and NOT demand the church change to allow the sin

Should one view the church should change to allow ones sin as good, they are viewing religion as a work of man that is flexible and malleable by man, they therefore cannot be Christian

That same view is why liberals cannot be Christian. They view things like abortion are moral and just and therefore the church should change to allow those things.

This is a vile belief hewn from satans goal to convince man that he knows better than god

God does not love us for who we are, he loves us for who and what we can be. We must always try to be who he wants us to be and not who WE want to be.

Anything antithetical to that is not Christian

  • CWB - 13 years ago

Very simple. Jesus was not a practicing homosexual. Being a Christian means being Christlike

  • Stormy - 13 years ago

The adultress in the Bible who was about to be stoned was saved by Jesus ("let he who is without sin cast the first stone"). She was not condemned by Jesus, but neither did he say go ahead and commit adultery again - he said "go and sin no more." Similar stories abound in the Bible where Jesus saved sinners of all sorts: thieves, prostitutes, adulterers... and the outcome was the same - he forgave their sins and told them to sin no more. Homosexuality is like thievery and adultery: its a sin; its wrong. A homosexual man or woman is still a beloved child of God, but if they want to be a Christian and follow Jesus, they must renounce their sinful ways. They likely will not be perfectly pure the rest of their lives, just as a repentent thief or adulterer will likely commit sinful acts again. And know that I'm no better than anyone else; I'm a sinner and Jesus saved me. The key is that they accept Jesus as their Lord and savior and follow his teachings. Part of that is to recognize and freely admit that their previous actions, their previous lives, were wrong and sinful. They can't be a Christian, that is, a follower of and believer in Jesus as the only son of almighty God, and still profess that thievery or adultery or homosexuality is a righteous "lifestyle choice". Thievery, adultery and homosexuality are not righteous lifestyles, they are sinful; they are wrong. The bottom line, or more appropriately the top line, for a Christian is that a man or woman who is homosexual can be a Christian, just like the thief or adultress, if they repent, accept Jesus as their savior and reject their sinful lifestyle of homosexuality, or thievery, or adultery, or whatever sins separated them from God.

Remember: "For God who so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son to die for our sins, so that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but will have eternal life" And the good news from God is that all sinners can be saved. I'm a sinner and he saved me - he can save you too.

May God Bless all those who long in their hearts to be saved! Praise Jesus !

  • boatingbiker - 13 years ago

stealing is a sin on the cross jesus forgave the theif if all sins are equall and we all sin judge not

  • S Workman - 13 years ago

Can you be an alcoholic, a fornicator, an adulterer, a thief, etc. and be a Christian? I believe that being a Christian is all about making yourself better and repenting of your sins. Homosexuality is a sin, and needs to be overcome, Christianity is the best tool we have to overcome sins. Judging another unworthy to attend church because of a sin or transgression makes a person a sinner, and therefore unworthy to attend church.

  • Rich - 13 years ago

Sin, any sin, moves us away from God. As we move away from God or light, we move toward darkness. Adam, after partaking the fruit, tried to hide from God. In essence, he was moving away from God by attempting to hide from him. Of course, God knew where Adam was, He's omniscient. Adam really couldn't hide; and, as was promised in the garden when the instructions were given, Adam became mortal and subject to death - the consequence of his transgression. Just as with Adam, those who commit sin in any form without true repentance will face the consequences of their deeds. No amount of public opinion, public acceptance or legislation will change those consequences. The morals of society are eroding because people are foolish enough to believe that somehow they can tell God what is and isn't sin, and what will and will not be punished in the end. Homosexuality was once condemned in society and by Christianity. Of course, it has always been condemned by God. Now, it is quickly becoming accepted by a small, but growing segment of society. What is next? Are we to now begin to accept pedophilia or bestiality as acceptable practices? How about murder or or theft as common acceptable practices? As the morals of society decline, so will society itself follow that same path. Those who engage in sin and seek to justify themselves and their actions, desiring to continue in sin, seek to make God a liar by saying that what God has declared to be sin is not. They are only fooling themselves. True Christians seek to turn from sin toward God. Christ said, follow me, I am the way. True Christians follow Christ and his teachings.

  • Joe - 13 years ago

What is a "practicing" homosexual? Is it a gay person that participates in sexual intercourse or could it be gay person that practices celibacy? Either way, they are both sins because a celibate gay person would still have impure sexual thoughts and considering straight people also have impure sexual thoughts we both "practice" in sin, therefore we're all going to Hell.

  • Joe - 13 years ago

Everyone needs to get back to the story of the woman caught in the act of adultery. Jesus did not condemn this woman, but he did make it crystal clear that she needed to "Go and sin NO MORE." Will God accept a homosexual if they accept Christ as their Lord and Savior? Yes. Most certainly. Will God grant them entrance into Heaven if they continue to sin and ignore God's clear commandment? No. Same goes for Adultery, lying, and any other sin. God HATES SIN, but he LOVES people. Why can't people get this simple concept. Jesus demonstrated it so clearly to us. "Neither do I condemn you. GO AND SIN NO MORE." The idea that a person can be a 'practicing homosexual' and still be right with God is simple ignorance or willful deception. You can no more be a 'practicing homosexual' then you can be a 'practicing thief' or 'practicing murderer.' It is simply not possible to justify homosexuality unless you start ripping pages out of your Bible and throw them away because you don't like them.

  • Jacob - 13 years ago

We have all sinned, but after coming to Christ we also need to recognize our sin and set out to end it. This doesn't mean that it will be an easy transition, we all have our own vices to cope with and understand it's a long, strenuous journey, but the Lord needs to see that willingness from us of giving our lives to Him. Mirror Christ in everything you do it's not always the easy path, but it's the right one.

  • bradley - 13 years ago

We all have sin. Some sin is tougher to resist for some people than others. We may even be predisposed toward having weakness for any manner of sinful behavior. A common trait of a Christian, however, is a willingness to fight temptation and repent continuously, regardless of our circumstance. We're not perfect... but we should care a little..

  • Toni - 13 years ago

we all haved sinned and fall short of the glory of God. If you can't be a practicing homosexual and be a good christian than you also can't be a liar, gossip, have anger in your heart, a thief, etc. get my point... None of us meets that perfect standard that God requires which is why he sent his Son to die for our sins and offer us the GIFT of salvation. I think we "so called" good Christians are going to be very surprised when we stand before Jesus and he asks why we didn't share his message of love and salvation and allow the Holy Spirit to work on the heart. A Doctor doesn't tell a man who is sick to come back when his symptoms are gone and then he'll treat him,,,,,,We expect those who do not know Jesus to live as perfect christians, to hide their "symptoms" to be accepted. What hypocrites we have become. We better start following Jesus and not Religion

  • Danielle - 13 years ago

God loves homosexuals and wants them to be saved as much as anyone else. I believe that a practicing homosexual can come to Christ and be saved, and as he grows closer to God, the Holy Spirit will convict him or her of the sin in their lives. We're all imperfect, and Christians are trying to serve God and be more like Him every day. Part of that is keeping ourselves from habitual sin, and practicing homosexuality is a habitual sin. God is ready and willing to help those who love Him, all we have to do is ask. I pray for my homosexual brothers and sisters in Christ; that by the power of Christ in them, they will be able to renew their minds and overcome the temptation they face. I hope all of us as the body of believers will pray and act to stop all sin in our lives.
