I'm quite a bit late on this, but my opinion stands like this- the Backstreet Boys will always be the better singers than N'SYNC, even though Justin Timberlake is regarded as the best, and most successful. Also, Justin himself said that J.C. Chasez is a way better singer than him, but that since Justin had the showmanship he was able to have more success.
N'SYNC always had better dance moves, but they were about that. They had these crazy awesome dances, and people went crazy over them. You can't listen to an N'SYNC song without at least trying to do the dances with them. The Backstreet Boys only had a few songs that had dancing to them, and even then they weren't dances you could really do on your own because they were for music videos or they had choreography for a tour. But the lack of dancing works for BSB because their careers are about the music. N'SYNC didn't last because it was showmanship, and business- they didn't get along, and that's most likely why we won't see a reunion other than the VMA's this last year.

It's easy. Backstreet Boys win this poll. Backstreet Boys are better-looking. Their harmonization is perfect and they have such amazing voices. Backstreet Boys continued to record music even though Kevin Richardson left. And they had SO MANY big hits. Quit Playing Games With My Heart, I Want It That Way, As Long As You Love Me, Shape Of My Heart. NSYNC had what? Byebyebye? And just look at the other comments. Backstreet Boys all the way! Backstreet Boys are clearly better. Sorry NSYNC but there's really no fight at all here.

Back in the day, I felt like everyone listened to both.
However, I am now a musician myself and have developed my skills greatly since my childhood days of 90's cheesy pop music (real talk, 90's music just overall was not the best). And looking back on it, I realize something strange: and that is that N'sync's songs never struck me or left an impression. I definitely remembered some girly voice being all up in there (sorry, but JT is just not pleasing to my ear and anyone that compares him to Michael freaking JACKSON is crazy), but aside from maybe POP, I never liked them as much as their music was always playing.
So let's be real now, who is the all time best selling boy band in the world? Which boy band sold the most records? Which boy band came first (and therefore cannot be accused of being "copy cats")? Which boy band has five members that can ALL sing and have all been featured? Which boy band is STILL together and continues to draw fans from all over the world? N'sync did have great dancing in their videos (but for real, anyone that went to a BSB concert knows those boys can legit dance too), and if you ask me JC was a great singer. But what's more important in a vocal group? VOCALS, of course, and not dancing! And one or two people do NOT make up an entire group! The BSB are a team, and just the fact that they're still going after almost 20 years, included with a member having open heart surgery, overcoming drug addictions, manipulation from management, and family deaths, has to humble any music listener. I know I said that 90's music overall is just not that musical, but the BSB is so contemporary and even their old hits are still relevant. The fact that they have so much variety and are really just keeping up with the music scene in their sound makes me really love them. Their harmonies are tight, their stylistics add variation and amazing depth in emotion! Even their instrumentals are awesome (which I know doesn't reflect their abilities as singers, but definitely adds to their music and does to a degree reflect them). Justin Timberlake left N'sync and they fell apart after 3 records. Kevin Richardson left the Backstreet Boys, but the rest continued on to perform and tour and kept in touch with Richardson. And now all five are reunited once again to record an eighth album! The BSB's story is just so humbling and says a lot about them as a band. And like I said, I am a musician and have studied music and theory and such, and the BSB is more musical overall, and have stronger harmonies. They're all so different in style and voice, but together they blend to make something amazing. I'm not a vocalist, but all 5 definitely sing like angels to me. Nice ranges, precision, and they sound great live too!
Of course in the end, it's all about personal preference. But as far as success goes, the stats do clearly show that the Backstreet Boys are the best.

Howie is a successful business man, he's not desperate for money. He's managing a successful Canadian boyband Neverest (like BTR of Canada). If AJ is broke, he wouldn't spend $40,000 on the stupid Lindsay Lohan's picture to give his fiance as a gift, and this happened before the NKOTBSB tour. The person who is desperate for money is Joey who did garage sale with all his NSYNC possessions, sold his Floria mansion and moved to a smaller lot. And not to mentioned about JC's tax trouble.

I like how the journalist who wrote this article called it "the greatest boy-band debate" and yet she constantly just mentioned Justin in her posts. At what point does one person make up the boy-band personality. No one here is going to debate at whether he is talented or not(because he is extremely talented with all the opportunities he has been given) but did she forget what this debate was about. If you listen to both groups back to back you should consider how many solo CD's and #1 solo hits they had. BSB never left and have been around for over a decade now still preforming together and KNOW EACH OTHERS NAMES. Plus their music has harmony after harmony which blends and builds to perfect bridges. In my opinion of course, I believe that I could listen to a greatest hits album of BSB through the entire album. I would probably have to skip a few of N'Sync after getting board. I love POP but seriously the song does not need to be over 7 minutes long of the same words. I hate when it comes up on my pandora because at some point i just want it to be another hit from the 90's. Both bands have their memorable moments whether its BSB in the white suits coming off the plane or N'sync's No strings attached puppeteer music videos but for me it is what I see them and remember them today. BSB still brings me back to 90's and fall in love all over again and their MEGA ALUBM collection that people today still can remember today "Backstreeet's Back" "Black and Blue" and of course "Millennium". N'snyc was only around long enough for 3 albums, 4 if you include their christmas album. I would tell everyone to see the NKOTBSB concert and then make up your mind because it was beyond amazing to see both bands preform and bring middle aged women to their feet! It was Hit after Hit and at the end you didn't want it to end. Both said "lets party like its 1989 and 1999!" If its about the music and BOY BANDS (not just JT) my vote is clearly BSB as the best Boy band of all time! New Kids even said it themselves that the 5 guys that make up Backstreet are the real deal and don't plan on leaving the game for another decade. BSB FFL

BSB obvio!!! son los mejores artistas vocales de todas las boy bands. Todos ellos cantan en realidad, en cambio Nsync de todos solo cantaba Justin, el resto era nadie. Ellos staban destinados a ser bumblegum!!! super pop!! vendian bien, si para eso fueron creados, no??? BSB es una verdadera banda, al principio kisieron destacar tocando sus propios instrumentos. I have been to both BSB & Nsync concerts, and hands down BSB has more talent then alot of groups! They have written and cowritten the majority of their songs and music. They have ventured out and experimenting on their solo careers. With alot of positive outcome. I have seen One Nsync concert and was not impressed , by their lack of preforming very little of their own music, and a majority of other artists music. And I have seen Four BSB's concerts, and after my first BSB concert I was hooked! They have a way of making their fans feel like they are a part of their show, by interacting with them and making them participate! And I'm waiting for their next CD to comeout!

I have to vote BSB, I am still listening to them on a daily basis. And while I do have N*SYNC on my music player I only have like 5 songs that I even like...and while I can't argue that N*SYNC did a great job dancing, BSB is still the better group overall.

Definitely BSB. As was pointed out, there were only 2 singers on NSYNC, the rest were just back up dancers ad singers. In addition, Howie did sing on BSB songs. He had his own track featured I believe on Black and Blue where he did solos, and generally all the boys did solos at some point. BSB are the originals---and they had some amazing hits....

Forgot to mention....NSYNC wouldn't even be around if it wasn't for BSB. For those of you who don't know...this is the truth (go ahead and look it up).....Chris Kirkpatrick went to school with Howie D. Chris wanted to be a backstreet boy....they said no and found Brian instead. Chris was upset so then started his own group, which was NSYNC. So debate all you want, but the truth of the matter is....NSYNC wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for BSB. So all you NSYNC fans better pay tribute to BSB

BSB all the way!!!!! And I'm sorry, but I despise JT. I think his voice sucks, he sounds like a girl, and he is way too into himself. (just like that SNL skit....it shows his true colors) Plus it seems like he's more interested in acting than singing...so I wouldn't even count him as a musical performer now. After reading the debate about who is better and hearing both sides list the numerous songs each released, one song was omitted from this list even though it was a top 10 hit(Larger than Life). So i vote for BSB.

Ok -- I can't believe I need to say this but here goes: notice the creds on written songs. Most of them are written by other song writers for the BSB. But, you look at *NSync and most of the songs were written by either JT, JC or a combo. Their talent FAR outweighs that of the BSB...who can sing, but don't go the extra mile with writing/composing.
Also, look at who *NSync has collaborated with: Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Lisa "Left Eye", Nellie -- to name a few.
If we want to go by talent, and talent only -- *NSync wins, hands down.

Backstreet boys didnt measure up to Nsync not one bit and none of the backstreet boys are even on top or remembered to this date they all fell and dropped and were forgot about when "nsync" took a break, because they were copycats. I was actually listening to the radio and heard "As Long As You Love Me" and I went back and listened to many of BSB's songs and put some of them on my ipod. 'NSYNC were definitely less of a group than BSB were. That does have something to do with the fact that Justin is in general more talented than the rest of the group. Looking at BSB though, even though Nick might have been pushed by the record company, it was clear AJ and Brian were superior singers. I'll put AJ and Brian against anyone on 'NSYNC when it comes to vocal ability. 'NSYNC were definitely better singers, but MUSIC is the keyword. Musically, BSB is the better group.

This debate is kind of pointless. Backstreet Boys are the guys who started the "boy band" thing back up after New Kids. They had to work for their success. When they first formed, record companies wouldn't even look at them, so they had to tour different high schools to build a fan base, before being shipped over to the more pop friendly Europe. BSB broke open the doors for groups like N'Sync and 98 Degrees to find success. They overcome drug addictions, deaths in their families, Brian's heart surgery, and are still going strong, 18 years later. History aside, BSB can outsing N'Sync any day, especially Brian and AJ. I will admit that in the beginning, Nick wasn't that great and he tried to hard in his solo's, but over the years, he has developed into amazing singer. One thing I like about BSB is how none of them were bigger than the group itself. By N'Sync's 'Celebrity' album, they might as well have been called, Justin and the four other guys. (and just because Justin is the most well know doesn't mean he is the best singer). N'Sync did have some good catchy songs that I still listen to today. But they just can't compete with songs like 'I Want It That Way', 'Incomplete, or 'Shape of My Heart'. I honestly could care less about who dances better. I fell in love with there voices. The bottom line is N'Sync are nothing more than a distant memory. BSB are still together touring around the world and making new music for their fans.

what are we basing this debate on exactly? It's tough for the fans to be objective, obviously... everyone thinks their "favorite" is THE best- lol
from a vocal perspective, after having revisited all the hits mentioned above, it's hard to overlook the fact that Nsync's vocals have more soul in them and aren't quite as "vanilla" or plane-janey as BSB... that's not partiality as much as it is critique vocally. Justin & JC have more vocal ability in the way they sing, which makes for more interesting melodies and such.
from a dancing perspective, i encourage all rabid fans to you tube it. i mean, honestly, can you seriously suggest that BSB are good dancers???? there is no contest here. I realize that there are few awkard apples (Lance, anyone? lol) but even the caliber of choreography suggests that Nsync can handle a greater degree of difficulty in their pieces!
from a longevity perspective, i do think BSB's songs get the edge because their songs are more straight laced; meaning they're not so niche in the "pop, boy/band" with all the effects and such. i mean, aside from Nsync's powerful ballads, their songs do sound more dated than BSB's. So you can turn on the easy listening station or one of those mix stations of the 80's, 90's, etc. and their songs can be stomached from the average listener without too much gross out factor over that period of time in music! LOL
But that doesn't necessarily mean Nsync's songs aren't or weren't good songs when that style of music was popular.
Also, there was a period of time, I believe it was when Nsync released "Celebrity", when BSB was kinda MIA, no? It seemed like that's when it was all Nsync...
also from an acappella perspective- I can say that live no boy band actually sings all their vocals. Usually the BGV's are lip synced while the leads are sung live with the lead tracks low in the mix in case they go out of breath from all the jumping up and down.
However, how can anyone overlook songs like "Gone" "I Thought She Knew" & "O Holy Knew" which go out of their way to show case their vocal ability as it relates to a vocal group?? BSB doesn't seem to have songs like that...
I guess aside from those distinctions, it really boils down to taste preferences. It's pointless to make comparisons btwn NKOTB since they didn't have any rival boy bands in terms of competition so one could argue that their album sales might have been different if they did; Just like New Edition and Boyz to Men. No, I'm not saying that Nsync are better than or in the same category as New Edition or Boyz to Men. underscore, underscore...
I'm a vocalist so because of that, I have to go with Nsync. I've seen them both live; even their soundchecks. Based on that and the quality of their shows outside of the screaming female population of preteens, I think Nsync have better vocals and are better dancers.

BSB obvio!!! son los mejores artistas vocales de todas las boy bands. Todos ellos cantan en realidad, en cambio Nsync de todos solo cantaba Justin, el resto era nadie. Ellos staban destinados a ser bumblegum!!! super pop!! vendian bien, si para eso fueron creados, no??? BSB es una verdadera banda, al principio kisieron destacar tocando sus propios instrumentos. Luego componiendo, siendo solistas. Incursionando en otras cosas. Pro ellos como BSB se complemetan al maximo, su fusion es inconfundible. Los amo, respeto, admiro y VOTO POR ELLOS UN MILLON DE VECES!!!!
I have been to both BSB & Nsync concerts, and hands down BSB has more talent then alot of groups! They have written and cowritten the majority of their songs and music. They have ventured out and experimenting on their solo careers. With alot of positive outcome. I have seen One Nsync concert and was not impressed , by their lack of preforming very little of their own music, and a majority of other artists music. And I have seen Four BSB's concerts, and after my first BSB concert I was hooked! They have a way of making their fans feel like they are a part of their show, by interacting with them and making them participate! And I'm waiting for their next CD to comeout!
I have to vote BSB, I am still listening to them on a daily basis. And while I do have N*SYNC on my music player I only have like 5 songs that I even like...and while I can't argue that N*SYNC did a great job dancing, BSB is still the better group overall.

Definitely BSB. As was pointed out, there were only 2 singers on NSYNC, the rest were just back up dancers ad singers. In addition, Howie did sing on BSB songs. He had his own track featured I believe on Black and Blue where he did solos, and generally all the boys did solos at some point. BSB are the originals---and they had some amazing hits....
Forgot to mention....NSYNC wouldn't even be around if it wasn't for BSB. For those of you who don't know...this is the truth (go ahead and look it up).....Chris Kirkpatrick went to school with Howie D. Chris wanted to be a backstreet boy....they said no and found Brian instead. Chris was upset so then started his own group, which was NSYNC. So debate all you want, but the truth of the matter is....NSYNC wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for BSB. So all you NSYNC fans better pay tribute to BSB
BSB all the way!!!!! And I'm sorry, but I despise JT. I think his voice sucks, he sounds like a girl, and he is way too into himself. (just like that SNL skit....it shows his true colors) Plus it seems like he's more interested in acting than singing...so I wouldn't even count him as a musical performer now. And how dare you even compare JT to Michael Jackson?!?? NO WAY!! MJ far exceeds JT in talent! Shame on you for even comparing the two! That is such an insult to MJ!!

After reading the debate about who is better and hearing both sides list the numerous songs each released, one song was omitted from this list even though it was a top 10 hit(Larger than Life). So i vote for BSB.

Bsb did the same thing too.. and not only their 3 lead singer did that. BSB are the team. They are really great team..
JC and JT might think that I'm the man... and also.. there are so many nsync fans that actually jealous of JT because JC is not as popular as JT. That's not a team I think..
in this poll we talk about team, group.. not individually... don't get bias just because of justin solo project.
Ok -- I can't believe I need to say this but here goes: notice the creds on written songs. Most of them are written by other song writers for the BSB. But, you look at *NSync and most of the songs were written by either JT, JC or a combo. Their talent FAR outweighs that of the BSB...who can sing, but don't go the extra mile with writing/composing.
Also, look at who *NSync has collaborated with: Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Lisa "Left Eye", Nellie -- to name a few.
If we want to go by talent, and talent only -- *NSync wins, hands down.
NSYNC of course why even debate its simple. Any one in there right mind would vote Nsync. Backstreet boys didnt measure up to Nsync not one bit and none of the backstreet boys are even on top or remembered to this date they all fell and dropped and were forgot about when "nsync" took a break, because they were copycats. So they had nothing and no one to copy and try to compare themselves too. And as a big nsync fan when i was little that feels great to say. Who needs a voting poll thats weak!!!

NSYNC just had a little extra something in their personalities, acapella arrangement, music videos and live performances. They were also generally more creative overall. Plus BSB doesn't have JC Chasez.

I was actually listening to the radio and heard "As Long As You Love Me" and I went back and listened to many of BSB's songs and put some of them on my ipod. 'NSYNC were definitely less of a group than BSB were. That does have something to do with the fact that Justin is in general more talented than the rest of the group. Looking at BSB though, even though Nick might have been pushed by the record company, it was clear AJ and Brian were superior singers. I'll put AJ and Brian against anyone on 'NSYNC when it comes to vocal ability. 'NSYNC were definitely better singers, but MUSIC is the keyword. Musically, BSB is the better group.
This debate is kind of pointless. Backstreet Boys are the guys who started the "boy band" thing back up after New Kids. They had to work for their success. When they first formed, record companies wouldn't even look at them, so they had to tour different high schools to build a fan base, before being shipped over to the more pop friendly Europe. BSB broke open the doors for groups like N'Sync and 98 Degrees to find success. They overcome drug addictions, deaths in their families, Brian's heart surgery, and are still going strong, 18 years later. History aside, BSB can outsing N'Sync any day, especially Brian and AJ. I will admit that in the beginning, Nick wasn't that great and he tried to hard in his solo's, but over the years, he has developed into amazing singer. One thing I like about BSB is how none of them were bigger than the group itself. By N'Sync's 'Celebrity' album, they might as well have been called, Justin and the four other guys. (and just because Justin is the most well know doesn't mean he is the best singer). N'Sync did have some good catchy songs that I still listen to today. But they just can't compete with songs like 'I Want It That Way', 'Incomplete, or 'Shape of My Heart'. I honestly could care less about who dances better. I fell in love with there voices. The bottom line is N'Sync are nothing more than a distant memory. BSB are still together touring around the world and making new music for their fans.
what are we basing this debate on exactly? It's tough for the fans to be objective, obviously... everyone thinks their "favorite" is THE best- lol
from a vocal perspective, after having revisited all the hits mentioned above, it's hard to overlook the fact that Nsync's vocals have more soul in them and aren't quite as "vanilla" or plane-janey as BSB... that's not partiality as much as it is critique vocally. Justin & JC have more vocal ability in the way they sing, which makes for more interesting melodies and such.
from a dancing perspective, i encourage all rabid fans to you tube it. i mean, honestly, can you seriously suggest that BSB are good dancers???? there is no contest here. I realize that there are few awkard apples (Lance, anyone? lol) but even the caliber of choreography suggests that Nsync can handle a greater degree of difficulty in their pieces!
from a longevity perspective, i do think BSB's songs get the edge because their songs are more straight laced; meaning they're not so niche in the "pop, boy/band" with all the effects and such. i mean, aside from Nsync's powerful ballads, their songs do sound more dated than BSB's. So you can turn on the easy listening station or one of those mix stations of the 80's, 90's, etc. and their songs can be stomached from the average listener without too much gross out factor over that period of time in music! LOL
But that doesn't necessarily mean Nsync's songs aren't or weren't good songs when that style of music was popular.
Also, there was a period of time, I believe it was when Nsync released "Celebrity", when BSB was kinda MIA, no? It seemed like that's when it was all Nsync...
also from an acappella perspective- I can say that live no boy band actually sings all their vocals. Usually the BGV's are lip synced while the leads are sung live with the lead tracks low in the mix in case they go out of breath from all the jumping up and down.
However, how can anyone overlook songs like "Gone" "I Thought She Knew" & "O Holy Knew" which go out of their way to show case their vocal ability as it relates to a vocal group?? BSB doesn't seem to have songs like that...
I guess aside from those distinctions, it really boils down to taste preferences. It's pointless to make comparisons btwn NKOTB since they didn't have any rival boy bands in terms of competition so one could argue that their album sales might have been different if they did; Just like New Edition and Boyz to Men. No, I'm not saying that Nsync are better than or in the same category as New Edition or Boyz to Men. underscore, underscore...
I'm a vocalist so because of that, I have to go with Nsync. I've seen them both live; even their soundchecks. Based on that and the quality of their shows outside of the screaming female population of preteens, I think Nsync have better vocals and are better dancers.
Ok Justin is amazing I will not argue there but to compare him to the late great Michael Jackson is crazy because no one will ever compare and the best since? Well that's quite a bit of a stretch. However as amazing as Justin is, he didn't capture my heart until he went solo so I have to stick with my boys in BSB! BSB ALL THE WAY!

Vote for NSYNC!! I love both BSB & NSYNC equally and it was hard for me to choose but NSYNC needs to win! It might help them go back on tour! Come on BSB fans (I am one), we already have NKOTBSB! Let the NSYNC fans have something.
