Why do you think there was so little buzz about Jim Thome approaching 600 home runs?

Asshole-Rod isn't even worthy of carrying Jim Thome's cleats.

He was never the best player on any of his teams, so he is not generally viewed as being hall of fame material. He only has 600 homers because of the DH, which the others in the club did not need.

It's because he's not a Yankee. We had to start following Jeter's chase for 3,000 around the time he hit 2,800, with breathless updates on ESPN every time he came to bat (as if he was going to get 200 hits in one a bat).

I think it's partly because the steroids era has overshadowed the pursuit of major slugging records and partly because it's the 3rd time in the last 4 years that a slugger has reached 600 homeruns. It only happened 3 times between between 1931 and 2002 (Ruth, Aaron and Mays). Since then, it's happened 5 times (Bonds, A-Rod, Sosa, Griffey and Thome). Of those 5, three are suspected or known to use PED's. The shadow of PED's will loom large over the slugging accomplishments of the last 20 years.

Not a Yankee or Red Sox so no one in the media, including Hot Clicks, cares.

It also would have been made a bigger deal of had he not done it on the road and had he not hit 2 in one game to reach the milestone. Had he hit one last night, it would have allowed the Twins and Tigers to set something up for #600, but he hit both and the teams did not have time to prepare.

It would have been a bigger deal if the Twins were having a better year and getting more coverage! Also would help if Jim was an every day DH, but with injuries, he hasn't been able to do that so no one knew when he his next chance to hit a home run would be!
