HP discontinuing WebOS products was shocking but irrelevant. HP made a bigger ripple in the mobile market when they sold off their large inventory of tablets at $100 than when they made the announcement.

Google purchasing Motorola Mobile was shocking and could have a huge impact on the future of the mobile market.

Does HP have any good mobile patents. Maybe Google should buy up WebOS and hire the developers. Google has a record of putting software and developers they buy to good use; witness the incredible improvements from Android 2 to Android 3, and WebOS should go for cheap seeing as how it has close to a 0% market penetration.

There's really no contest. The googorola deal was completely unexpected, but the signs were all there for the HP incident. As much as I love it and enjoy occasionally tooling with my wife's Palm Pixi, sales of webos devices have been faltering for years. Regardless of what anyone says the mindsets of smartphone and tablet consumers are incredibly polarizing. The average Joe or Jane typically only cares for two choices. The average Joe or Jane only knows "Droid or "iCon" if they're smart and secondarily they may ask how many gee bees its got.
