My daughter has Asperger's syndrome. She did not fully speak till she was three; at 3 and a half, she learned to read. She didn't sit or stand till ten months and did both at the same time.
She didn't play with her peers, but accepted her cousin as a playmate. She has always been a solitary person, but she is very intelligent, and no too patient with those among her who don't
share her intellect (at work). Her passion was and is puzzles and advanced mathematics.
My grandson just turned l6. He started having rages when he was 5. He is brilliant, but difficult. He did speak well at age 2, however he was oppositionally defiant at an early age. He will not do anything or learn anything that he is not interested in. His passion is filming and he is far advanced in his hobby which will be his life's work. He only associates with adults who share his interest.

My now 12 year old typical daughter was in the original infant sibs study by Rebecca Landa at Kennedy Krieger in 1999. So happy to see how this research has contributed to our understanding of autism in families and has helped identify so many young children.
